Bad Luck Dragon: a standalone short story
Bad Luck Dragon My dad was the best storyteller I ever knew. Maybe that’s not unique -- most kids who were lucky enough to have a parent who told them stories probably think their mom or dad could spin tales the way the QuAati build starships. He told me once, when I was old enough (my dad never st...

Re: Saying hello to some old friends: Universe Introduction
Well, there is no overarching plot to pit each of these nations against each other in a massive world war one in space scenario. While there is plenty of interaction between the nations, and there have almost certainly been both wars and alliances in the past (and will be again in the future), we're...

Re: Apocrypha Redux
When I wrote the first few articles for the original Apocrypha, I think I really did have something like Spawn meets Neon Genesis Evangelion in my head.
Which perhaps explains a lot about not only the universe, but my state of the art at the time :p

Re: The United Freestates
That is, indeed, dinosaur cavalry. Well, not dinosaurs precisely, but close enough that if you saw one running your way with its massive claws out and a rider on its back armed with a ray-carbine, the difference would be the last thing on your mind. And by Rocketeer, I mean Rocketeer . http://upload...

Re: Official Movie Review Thread
Saw NOW YOU SEE ME last night. This movie came completely out of left field for me, in that two days before I saw it I had never even heard of it, and the day before I saw it eight people all said "you've got to go see this movie!" The best description of the plot I was given was "OCE...

Re: Update and Edit Notification Thread
Added the description for the Aitobishi zaibatsu in the Shogunate thread, and also a little poem at the header of the intro post. Just something small I felt like writing. Nothing important, surely. Not a bit.

Re: The United Freestates
The Few, the Brave, and the Free Free Battalions and Free Ships of Note and Prominence While there are hundreds of fighting forces acting under the Freestates banner, only a few of the Free Battalions and Ships have truly risen to the status granted to heroes and celebrities. These are the solders ...

Re: [Story] Cold Snap
I completely missed that, which just makes what I have planned for Teague and Chandra that much more weirdly synchronous! Also I goofed which branch Teague was in - should have double-checked on that, huh?

Chapter 2: Handoff Arlington Virginia, United States of America 1703 Hours, Eastern Standard Time, October 27 “You know,” said the man planting himself next to Chandra on the Metro waiting bench, “most kids your age who read that trash want to wear their hair down to their assholes and paint flower...

Re: The United Freestates
Sounds like a cool setting for stories with all the wild west and gilded age motifs ( when was the gilded age, incidentally, did it include the Roaring Twenties?) and I think it only makes sense to scale the size of the cosmos down to a number of planets that actually means something. As it is usua...

Update and Edit Notification Thread
Confession Time: I have a bad habit. Specifically, I like to make posts with the skeleton of what I'm going to write, and go back in and add little tiny bits at a time, slowly accreting a full, long post or article over time. This does, of course, have a flaw - the forum doesn't notify readers of wh...

Re: The Chrysanthemum Shogunate
I actually kinda like the idea that the Emperor might have a kind of empathic link to the people, though nothing so strong as direct telepathy. More like he has an innate sense of his, I suppose you might call it his approval rating? So he knows if there's trouble, and has a vague sense of where it ...

Re: The United Freestates
The names are pretty much direct correlations to their real-world U.S. regions. I'm engaging in a bit of generalization here, since I'm breaking 50 states down into 15, but it's my goal to capture an (exaggerated and pulpy) version of the character and culture of each region.

Re: The Chrysanthemum Shogunate
What happens when a commoner undertakes an epic quest to reach Kikuichi City to petition the Emperor to redress some petty oppression by a branch manager? That is a good question! It probably doesn't happen often (travel is, to one degree or another, restricted or at least monitored for commoners) ...

Shroom has the right of it - these fifteen are the worlds which have been granted statehood, while there are plenty of largely-unsettled "territories" on the frontier of Free Space.

Re: The Chrysanthemum Shogunate
Well, another perfectly valid reason why the Shogunate hasn't fragmented into their component zaibatsu is because the other great powers would have snapped them up. :) That is certainly a contributing factor :) I think there's a very strong mindset (maybe naturally-occurring, maybe engineered or at...
