Merry Christmas, gents! Looks like everone's have a pretty good one thus far! At present (haha, see what I did there? I'm so clever): -Cashy money and assorted gift cards -A shit-ton of Iain M. Banks books (who I've been meaning to read forever now, and really have no excuse not to anymore since I h...

[science and tech] Second Space

A Brief History of Second Space 1: The Great Dark Matter Hunt One of the biggest questions posed to Terran astronomers in the 20th century was the problem of the visible universe's mass/energy density. Namely, there was too much of it. As big as the universe was, and as much stuff was crammed into ...

Re: I suck at coming up with names for my planets

Check out also historical precedent for what people have named places when they first set foot on them. A lot of times they're pretty literal descriptions: i.e. Arizona, literally just means Dry Place. Often, a place will get named for the people who live there. This was especially common in the Mus...

Re: Universal Constants RP

Hey Shroomz, can we get a full on profile for Dick Klash? I think once we have that, we can get this baby rollin'. Of course, there's still plenty of room for more players. HINT HINT WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE. Kamin: Was Harding in the Marines or Army? I'm guessing Marines since he went up against Jacks...

Re: Crazy universe concept: retro hard SF

I really like this idea, actually! Reminds me a lot of stuff like Ministry of Space.

One question, though, is why there'd be no computers or similar technology in space, when it seems to me we'd need stuff like that just to keep the habitats running?

Glad you guys like it! Got a bit more for ya, and I think a map or two will be up soon, as well as flags and banners and the like. Plus, a bit more in-depth discussion on dahgs. 2 The Unionist infantrymen was young, fast, and knew how to use the sharp-tipped staff he was stabbing at Count Visman's t...

Re: [science & tech] Starships of the United Nations

I'll gladly admit I'm playing pretty fast and loose with the term "O'Neill Cylinder," in that it doesn't fit the Island Three model perfectly. In the 2270s, an O'Neill Cylinder simply means a space-going cylindrical habitat with a self-sustaining ecosystem and spun for simulated gravity. T...

Re: The Book Thread

I'm wondering whether or not to buy Snow Crash . I know it's a modern classic and everything, but I'm kind of burned out on sci-fi in general and genre convention-heavy cyberpunk in particular. I couldn't even make it through Revelation Space , and that's not a particularly thick book by any measur...

Looks good to me :) An absent-minded Indiana Jones, eh? Hey guys, while I'm certainly not gonna put a "race cap" on people's characters, I'd urge those who are interested but have yet to create a character to consider some of the other races. I made every polity involved in this endeavor f...

I was going for the Rust Belt as a whole, from the Great Lakes to Appalachia, so there's bits of both Coney Island and New Jersey in there, but also some Buffalo, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Detroit, with smatterings of post-Soviet Russia and blue-collar England and Germany. I'm thrilled you like i...

While there are almost fifty tiny, independent nations in the Belt, Ceres is the only significant power besides the Cameron Company, and as a result, Ceres has...
