Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited
I think how the Bragulans make war has a lot to do with how clever they're supposed to be about all the oppression. Does the system just want a whole lot of Bragulans to march into the jaws of battle, or does it want to beat other nations ? In the later case then yeah, I can see them forming social ...

I'll be honest, I've always found jodhpurs kind of goofy looking.

Re: Motley Musings
Obviously we can draw parallels to the American Civil War, but I like the wider political tensions. It strikes me as a little unusual that Caliora Empire waited so long to intervene, but certainly if nothing else moved them, Washington burning most of the place to the ground would.

If you can make Darkness' dialogue any more ridiculous, I will be honestly pretty shocked.

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited
A society like this strikes me as really volatile, even if that's how they're socialised and how their brain chemistry works. You'd think that even if the guys at the top are physiologically averse to playing nice to their underlings in any way, they'd at least present society with a tiny kernel of ...

Re: The Book Thread
Actually speaking of degeneration, I finished No Country For Old Men today. I finished The Road faster, but I read that on the plane back from Japan so had heaps of time. I think Blood Meridian was more powerful, but once again Cormac McCarthy demonstrates his incredible talent. If you haven't read ...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited
I'll just say I like the idea of Baylor trying to retire to some far off farming colony on the fringe (which is really an air conditioned resort where you run automated harvester machines for luxury goods). Trying being the operative word, as it's hard to escape the pull of the core even when you re...

Re: Gizmos, Gadgets & Gunnery
The comment in the article about the project running hugely over-budget makes me think that there might be some mileage in writing articles about things which did get canceled, even in the world of Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda. For flavour.

Revengence.
That's only half a joke, you'd think guys like this would do a really good business in acting as Furies in cowboy hats. That's a pretty obvious one admittedly. Hunting contract breakers is a little different but also probably appropriate.

When I hear about these guys I think 'Pinkertons'. That might be the wrong image to have, but my impression of the Pinkertons is that they were pretty bad dudes in their own way.

Re: Countries, Regions and Locations
The Red Menace is on your doorsteps, New York. Really beautiful building too, though I don't recognise it. When it's not moonlighting as the Communist consulate, what is it?
