So, let's begin again, but with a 1950s tech level. This time I'll put in one rule:

No Superweapons. Nuclear weapons are allowed, but you'll have to develop them in-story.

Summary of players.

I'd be up for this, provided there are enough other players to make things interesting enough.

was there color in the 50's

i've never seen any proof of that

Or seriously, what actually is 1950's tech? Is this going to be similarly politically to the real world?

Let's try to list some keywords to get a feel for the setting; correct any that are wrong:

Civilian:
COMMUNISTS
Shitty nuclear reactors
Cheap gas
Cooking with gas
Cars, trucks
B&W Television
Perfect morality
Sputnik
Chicken
GI Bill at home and Marshall plan overseas

Military:
COMMUNISTS
Heavy rifles
Carpet bombing
Submarines
Airplanes
A-bomb fever
Helicopters?
Radar
Transistor radios?

------

Stuff that isn't around yet:

Civil rights
Computers (hence limited automation; no guided missiles, etc)
Color just plain doesn't exist and you can't prove otherwise
Home taping
Surgeon General's warnings
Violence in movies and sex on TV

Stuff that was around but is no longer:

Battleships (airplanes have already obsoleted them)
Nazis, but they would be in recent memory
The British Empire - declining rapidly during these years

What am I missing?

Since you'd be making up your own nation, you could have anything you want (including COMMUNISTS!)

Frankly if I'm going to play I'll primarily do it for the awesome aircraft. We've just entered the jet (and thus the supersonic) age, everything is ATOMIC, rocketry is still in its infancy, and best of all--political correctness has not yet been invented, so it's perfectly okay to napalm entire cities.

It will be glorious.

I'm definitely game for this, as, at the very least, it will allow me to unleash every technological and military terror devised by the military during the '50's.

The tech interests me far far less than the politics.

I could be a belligerent colonial power desperately trying to hold on to its glory against the sweeping currents of change.

Prepare yourself for such things as the n-word, rebellion crushing, civil wars, and of course the obligatory COMMUNIST REVOLTS.

If any of you fuckers dare to do anything other than unconditionally support my upper class in their HONORABLE STRUGGLE against the impoverished workers UNWASHED BARBARIAN MASSES, we will not be amused. And don't even think about funding the so-called "freedom fighters" in the colonies.

Or else.

You'd only be the fifteenth person in an OZworld RP to do such a nation. The originality is stunning. :) I'd actually love to move this RP up to the sixties- perhaps it's just the MGS3 binge I just moved off of.

exactly

With so many assholes all going after the same thing, there is so much opportunity for the game! By which I mean WORLD WAR ONE ALL OVER AGAIN!

btw, let me quote my man Charles de Gaulle: "France has no friends, only interests."

What a kick ass dude.

Man. I was going to play a semi-colonialist power that was totally not Germany. But if you're all going to do that, then I shall be a nation that will bring democracy to the world.

WITH STRATEGIC BOMBERS.

Hmmm, right now the prospect of playing as a French Union-style colonial power, i.e., one that's attempting to "modernize" (read: save) their empire, is appealing. At the very least I'll be able to make use of de Gaulle's little gems.

was there color in the 50's

i've never seen any proof of that
Actually, the first film to be shot in mostly-colour was released in 1939, eleven years earlier, and one of the most famous 1950s sci-fi films was mostly in colour. One of the earliest uses of colour in a filmed production was actually silent, being The Phantom of the Opera, famous for the scene in which Lon Chaney, dressed in red, paraded out on stage as the Phantom. One of the earliest colour photographs was taken in 1866, and is one of the oldest ones to have survived; a lot of pioneering work on colour photography was done somewhat later, during the early 20th century, by a man named Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky, in a massive and fascinating photo-documentary which was extremely interesting to look through.

Just a few random facts from your local Nerd.

Something we really need to do is decide on a rough history of the world. What I'm thinking is there was no WW1; we're still sitting on that powderkeg.

What we have is 1950's tech with 1900's politics. The colonial empires are still going strong, Europe (well, our version of it anyway) is still great. Without the two world wars to ravage them, the great powers are still great powers giving no chance for superpowers to emerge.

Without the pressing need of the war, the Bomb may not have been developed as quickly - that playing field can remain somewhat even. I'd expect all the great powers to have nuclear weapons programmes (the real foundation work into nuclear physics was pretty much all before the war anyway), and odds are most of them are finding good success by now.

Little conflicts might have shown the efficacy of aerial bombardment and mechanized infantry, but at the same time, the lessons might not have sunk in yet to everyone without rivers of blood from WW1. Great powers might still be steaming out great battleships (NUCLEAR BATTLESHIPS!) and digging intricate trench networks. Of course, at the same time, someone would be seeing the obvious, and spies would pick it up... nuclear battleships I can actually see, but I don't think anyone would be naive enough to skip past flying bombers.

Actually, that's kick ass. Potentially best of both worlds!

And surely racism still runs deep. Which it did in the real world 1950's anyway, but I could see it being even worse without Hitler around to give it such a bad name.

Communism would probably be hitting the world since the economic conditions are ripe for it, but without the catalyst of suck from WW1, might not have taken hold of a great power yet. There may or may not be a full blown Red scare.

I'd better get to bed, but here's some things to mull over.

Sounds good to me. Do you think we should stick with the map of our world, then? We can then partition it the way we want, that'll at least spare us the trouble of having to draw a new map.

Question: I heard someone mention Kaiju related shenanigans, so what is the general level of adherence to reality in these games?

I think, if it's the fifties, we could very much tap into the old school CSW fifties hijinks. Countries could have treaties defending against giant ants and mantises. The fifties time limit seems reactionary to me on the part of Kamin, trying to avoid the 20XX timeline (which I keep swearing would have worked out without the contast war whoring).

But, if we're using the real world map, I totally call Australia.
