TERRAN SECTOR
United States of America
A Democratic Republic of 81 States. Reformed during the massive re-structuring of the old USA and Mexico following the North American War, with the two countries merging to form a new United States of America, usually just shortened to America or USA. Since then, the USA has also granted statehood to Puerto Rico and founded two new states on Luna, Armstrong and Tranquilidad. Roughly 2% of American citizens are also permanent citizens of one of the four Terran space station complexes, and less than .3% reside in outposts over Venus and Mercury.
Some states either joined other countries, became autonomous, or dissolved entirely during or after the North American War - Alaska degenerated into civil war, and is currently owned by the Russian Confederacy and Canada; Hawai'i seceded peacefully after the war, and is still a close ally of the USA; the Florida panhandle remains a US state, but everything south of Orlando seceded and joined the Caribbean League during the war, as did Yucatan. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan seceded during the war, and was annexed by Canada, becoming the Huron province. In 2100, to mark the turn of the new century, the United States relinquished government of Manhattan Island, which later became the Manhattan Omniopolis. The rest of New York City remains in American hands.
Current list of States: Aguascalientes, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Armstrong (2133), Baja California, North California, South California, Campeche, North Carolina, South Carolina, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Colima, Columbia (2018), Colorado, Connecticut, Dakota, Delaware, Distrito Centrale (2018), Durango, Florida, Georgia, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Jalisco, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mexico, Michigan, Michoacán, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Morelos, Nayarit, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puebla, Puerto Rico (2033), Querétaro, Quintana Roo, Rhode Island, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Tennessee, Tranquilidad (2105), North Texas, South Texas, Tlaxcala, Utah, Veracruz, Vermont, North Virginia, Greater Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Zacatecas.

Community of Ganymede
A Neo-Libertarian Republic, with one of the fewest government programs and least government spending of any major UN Nation. Ganymede espouses individualism and personal liberty above all other ideals, sometimes to their detriment - rampant crime, scandal and a sour relationship with their neighbors on Europa, Callisto and Io are the price Ganymedans pay, though some would say that the benefits far outweigh the costs. Despite Jovian propaganda, Ganymede is not an anarchy - there is a House of 200 Padres and Madres (the local term for representatives, leftover from Ganymede's first Spanish colonists) who can compose bills, which can later by voted on by any and all citizens over Grapevine. Every citizen over the age of 16 (or racial equivalent) can vote on any law with a special Grapevine account, and laws are often hotly debated online between two or more political factions. Often, these debates devolve into flame-wars, but they are also the place where most Padres and Madres get their start on the political stage. The executive branch consists of the Pentacle, made up of the Secretaries of Commerce, Justice, Defense, Culture, and Diplomacy, each of which are voted into office every one thousand and one days, with a two-term limit. Local-level mayors and sheriffs are elected every 700 days, and are only allowed a single term per position. This rapid turnover for executive positions has been in place ever since the first colony ships to Ganymede launched, in order to prevent political dynasties from forming and cementing an unwanted by legitimately empowered ruler, and it leads to Ganymede being extremely active, almost frenzied, when it comes to politics. Ganymedan politics are highly fluidic, but the constant give-and-take of factions, parties, and stances typically evens out, and Ganymede continues its tightrope walk that seems to have every but Ganymedans nervous whenever they tune in for the evening news.
Ganymede's influence on Solar and, in some ways to a greater degree, Galactic politics is twofold: One, Ganymede is a major port world, with more ships landing and taking off from Ganymede every hour than any other world in Sol System save for Earth, Mars, and Titan, and there is a brisk, some might say breakneck trade market on the planet. Ganymede's thousands of small independent banks handle sometimes billions of euros a day in credit, hard cash, goods, barter collateral, easy promises and winning smiles. This is to say nothing of the planet's gray market, which is just as active and almost completely unregulated by the government, partially because there just aren't enough police or federal investigators to handle the job, and partially because, while their legality might be questionable, their profit is not. However, Ganymede is not run by gangsters - while most drugs, gambling, and even firearms are more or less there for anyone who can afford them, Ganymede strictly regulates the prostitution industry. Prostitution is legal, and barely even socially scandalous, but only when conforming to federal codes and regulations. Ditto for mercenary activity, off-market cybernetics, and XP.
Second, Ganymede is widely considered the most culturally diverse nation in the UN, with almost 37% of its population consisting of non-Terrans, the highest of any nation. Millions of expatriates from the Commonwealth, the Confederation, and even a few ronin and independents from the Empire live on Ganymede, and register as citizens of the local government and the UN alike. It is easier to become a citizen of Ganymede than for almost any other nation in the UN. This patchwork of cultures has led to Ganymede becoming a hotspot for entertainment, science, diplomacy, tourism, and these groups practically shove money into Ganymedans' pockets when they come to visit. This is the primary way the Ganymede maintains its strong economy with such low taxes.
Ganymede is not a militarily powerful nation, comprising less than .5% of the UNCSF, UNCAF, and UNCIS, an extremely low amount considering Ganymede's large population. Ganymede does maintain a small space force, mostly consisting of light carriers and fighter craft with a few troop transports and mostly concerns itself with anti-piracy and search and rescue operations, and each County has a volunteer armed force that can, if necessary, be mobilized for full military service, but which usually serves as police, emergency services, and a humanitarian relief force.
Ganymede has a total of fourteen enclosed, subterranean cities where its citizens live, which are divided into four counties by geographic proximity and population, plus the fifth county, the Robert Heinlien space station complex. Each county has 40 Padres or Madres, and represent between 8 and 11 million citizens. These counties, listed by population, are: Nova County (Nova City, Cranberry City) Theresa County (Santa Theresa, San Miguel, Calliope, Aquarius, Asturia, Kandor), Heinlein County (Robert Heinlein SSC), Valley County (Leticia City, Corimand, San Hector) and Summit County (Mesaverde, Montblanc, Hetfield,).

Re: [cosmopolitics] The United Nations
Very interesting premise, Artemis. I'm especially interested in the North American War and how it forced the US and Mexico to merge (or was it that the US just picked up the shattered pieces of Mexico). However, I do have a question. You mention a Distrito Centrale at one point, which I am assuming is the former D.F., but Washington D.C. is nowhere to be found. Does that mean that D.C. STILL hasn't been given statehood yet (which would actually be hilarious in a perverse sort of way)? Also, were precisely does Colombia reside in the US?

Re: [cosmopolitics] The United Nations
Columbia is the former D.C. I'd originally planned on just making D.C. part of the new state of North Virginia, but I have a few friends from the D.C. area who got sour looks on their faces when I told them about this, so I gave them a fair chunk of the Potomac valley and made it a state in its own right.

Re: [cosmopolitics] The United Nations
In my defense, you spelled Columbia with an 'o' instead of a 'u', which made me assume it was some sort of new Mexican state you carved out.
I can understand the sour looks, though. Being from California myself, I can tell you that I can think of many, many people that would be grateful at the notion of SoCal no longer having to deal with NoCal. After all, they practically are two different states in real-life, who why the hell not complete the transition?

Hehe, yeah that was kinda stupid of me
And oh, definitely, SoCal and NorCal are nothing alike. My family lived in L.A. for a little over a year, and when my mom and one of my sisters went to visit San Francisco a while back, they said it was like a totally different country.

Re: [cosmopolitics] The United Nations
As always I like your flagwork a lot; the New Republic of Australia reminds me a lot of what you did for Full Metal Contact way back in the days . I do think the UN map is overly detailed however; I think the current UN logo is a beauty of 50s/60s minimalism (laurel wreaths + world map as seen from the north pole); perhaps it would be better to simply replace the Earth with a spiral galaxy rather than add a gas giant plus moons and everything? It looks pretty awesome the way it does now, but message-wise I'm not sure it's entirely on the ball, you know...
A similar thing goes for the Caliphate for that matter; personally I like what you did with the four minarets and everything but considering the touchiness in Islamic nations vis-a-vis visual depictions of, well, pretty much anything, wouldn't it be better to just stick to a moon and stars?

Re: [cosmopolitics] The United Nations
Yeah, that's about the twentieth design for a new U.N. flag that I've tried, and you're right, the original always manages to look cleaner and sleeker. I also don't want it to end up looking to much like the flag of the United Federation of Planets.
Which is TOUGH, because that's a bitchin' cool flag.
I'll keep poking away at it, and I'll give the spiral galaxy design another try, too.
The minarets on the Enceladan flag are specifically there to, just as real minarets do, call the faithful to the new Caliphate - I really don't want to lose that, I think it's a pretty powerful message. From what I understand, it's mostly the human form that Islam has a problem with, not architecture. However, if anyone does find it problematic, I will change it.

I just noticed the Kim Stanley Robinson SSC. Is this named after the actress from The Right Stuff?

Actually, it's named for the guy who wrote Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars, which I highly recommend as some of the best science fiction novels I've ever read!
