Galactic Timeline

Post by Artemis »

~500 BCE: The Thrau Empire is founded, and begins expanding through the star system they share with the still-primitive Saryans.

861: The Carepakeh Empire is founded, the Emperor and his warlords having spent the last three centuries swallowing every fiefdom on Pakethar. Thus begins the oldest surviving global government system in the known galaxy.

930: The legendary Physicist of Blackworld undergoes the Eureka Ordeal, and writes her Journal. It will be nearly seven centuries before the Journal is publicly acknowledged and published in a widespread format.

1204: The Klashnoi on Nor'kass' supercontinent manage to overthrow the Temple, the theocratic dictatorship that has ruled all Klashnoi for thousands of years. The rebellion ends with the death of the Bishop of Hammers, and recovered documents outline an earlier Klashnoi caste-based society based on vocation and skill.

1209: The Sanuki Conglomerate is founded, and enters into a limited trade agreement with the Thrau Empire. The Sanuki are instructed by the Thrau not to contact other races, even if they have achieved Second Space travel.

1215: The Klashnoi tribal system is formalized, originally incorporating thirty-seven Great Tribes into the Tribal League.

1470: Centuries-old radio transmissions, believed to be of Thrau origin, reach Pakethar, proving the existence of other intelligent life in the galaxy. The Carepakeh Emperor proclaims the manifest destiny of the Empire and its people, to unite and watch over all life in the galaxy, and orders an immediate expansion into space, with only himself and his court to remain on Pakethar. By the end of the year, the Carepakeh have launched more than seven percent of their population into space.

1617: Lomusa, the homeworld of the Sanuki Conglomerate, suffers a near-global seismic event, killing tens of millions. Hundreds of Sanuki vessels return to Lomusa bringing aid, unaware that the worldquake has unleashed a long-dormant virus responsible for the periodic extinction cycle on Lomusa.

1821: The Carepakeh Empire is wrought by civil war, as a group of rogue Drones, known as the Warlords, attempts to overthrow the rule of the near-mythical Emperor and his Queens. Desperate for new resources, strategic ground, or simply finding a place away from the war, Carepakeh fleets explode outward from their home space, quadrupling the already-considerable size of the Empire over the next two centuries.

1883: The first Janeshian Conference is held at the College of the Tech-Angels on Blackworld, so named because of it's organizer and lead lecturer, Janesh of the Ordained Brotherhood of Physicists. The language of Desertspeak is formalized and codified, and with this language the Brotherhood begins its century-long mission to spread the words and lessons of the Tech-Angels to all of Blackworld.

1907: The last of the Sanuki perish on their colony world, later called Oryam, the final victims of the Lomusa extinction virus.

1942: First contact between the Algians and Hamachels, which degenerates into a short, largely bloodless border conflict over the Second Space skipways on the edges of the Hamachel home system. This is largely known as the Second Space War, occasionally as the First Galactic War, though most consider this monicker to be far too dramatic for a war that lasted only two years and claimed less than three hundred lives.

1945: The United Nations is founded on Earth after the end of World War II. Its power at this point is limited to diplomatic and humanitarian efforts.

1953: The Hamachel Parliament of Clans and the Algian Commonwealth combine to form the Interstellar Commonwealth shortly following the Second Space War armistice.

1957: Sputnik I, the first Terran-made artificial satellite, achieves stable orbit over Earth. Later that year, Sputnik II is launched, carrying the dog Laika, the first living being to be launched into space from Earth. The First Terran Space Age begins.

1969: The Thrau Empire seemingly implodes, with all Thrau, including their ships and material, racing back toward Goldworld, just as the Interstellar Commonwealth opens up trade negotiations. Shortly after, the Thrau vanish, leaving behind empty colonies, abandoned vessels and stations, corrupted computer systems, and their vast network of skipways.

1986: The Space Shuttle OV-099 Challenger breaks up in Earth atmosphere, causing the deaths of all seven crew members. End of the First Terran Space Age.

1984: At great loss of lives, resources, and worlds, the Carepakeh Empire is finally re-united as the last of the Warlords are defeated at the Battle of Seven Moons. The Empire begins the long, slow process of recovering from the war. The first public appearance of the Emperor in over five hundred years takes place on the loyalist flagship Too Late the Foe Realizes His Mistake, proclaiming victory and memorializing all who were lost in the war, before returning to Pakethar once again. He has not been seen since.

1992: The Evil Howling Death Storm, which persists to present day, completely envelopes Kriolon in less than 120 days, driving the Krioli back into the ancient cave cities, and killing off 98% of surface life. The exact Krioli death toll during the opening salvo of the EHDS is still unknown, but is estimated somewhere between 2 and 9 million. The storm also cuts off the barely self-sufficient Glitter Reef, the first Krioli space station constellation.

2000: Millennial celebrations on Earth are punctuated by an announcement from NASA and ESA of the start of a joint Mars mission. The Cameron Company is founded in Boston by Scott Cameron, and begins immediately supplying technology and research to the Mars effort.

2003: The borders of the Carepakeh Empire and the Interstellar Commonwealth meet at what will become Four Corners system. The Carepakeh, believing themselves the divinely-ordained protectors of the galaxy, demand the Commonwealth give aid and land to the Empire to help recover from their civil war. The Commonwealth refuses, though it does offer to open trade routes and offer aid to suffering Carepakeh. This perceived indifference earns the Commonwealth the ire and contempt of the Carepakeh, and the Empire invades Commonwealth space, determined to take the resources and space they desperately need by force. The Second Galactic War begins.

2010: The Saryan Technocracy is founded on Goldworld, the tombstone of Thrau civilization and the first Saryan colony. Speculation that Saryan evolution may have been guided or even supercharged by the Thrau begins with the discovery of Saryan DNA samples in Thrau facilities.

2037: An outbreak of airborne AIDS cripples the Terran nations of East Africa and the Middle East, and soon spreads to South America, triggering fears of a worldwide epidemic. The United Nations is given unprecedented power in order to calm the situation. Operation: Blunderbuss, a multi-national task force lead by Great Britain, begins a campaign to flush out terrorism and corruption in AIDS-battered countries. This leads to a near-total redrawing of most maps of Earth, and the new role and power of the United Nations.

2039: Quickly running out of supplies, and still unable to contact their fellows on Kriolon, the 138 citizens of Glitter Reef send out more than 500 message probes broadcasting what they hope will be interpreted as a distress signal. To their shock, and later relief, a Commonwealth Starcruiser picks up the message, and though their resources are spread thin from the war, the Commonwealth begins an evacuation and relief effort on Kriolon, reuniting the planet with Glitter Reef, giving the Krioli Second Space drives, and earning the gratitude of the Krioli people.

2042: The first Tekks are discovered on Earth, an amnesiac tribe wandering the Sahara desert. The Tekk genetic code is unraveled, revealing their genes to be similar, but vastly more complex than Terrans. Tekks begin to come out of the woodwork all across Earth, even on the colonies on Selene.

2045: After nearly half a decade of bloodshed, the Second Galactic War ends with a Commonwealth victory, at the battle of Katarika. Though the Empire never formally surrenders or admits defeat, hostilities end with the Empire having lost more than 11% of their territory, their military reduced even more than from the Civil War, the Queens at each other's thoraxes, and with more than a billion Carepakeh lives lost. The Commonwealth, who lost close to 750 million lives and two worlds, establish the Wall of Stars, relocating or destroying their skipways along the Imperial border, and cementing the animosity between the Commonwealth and the Empire that persists to this day.

2046: The Krioli officially join the Interstellar Commonwealth, and begin helping to rebuild the superpower with medical aid and colonizing new words.

2058: The Terran colony mission to Mars, delayed by the Blunderbuss Wars, finally gets underway. To the surprise of nearly all Terrans, the Mars fleet is propelled by faster-than-light Second Space travel, developed by the Cameron Company in 2024 but not publicly revealed until now. Start of the Second Terran Space Age.

2061: The Saryan Technocracy achieves Second Space flight, and rapidly begins reclaiming their corner of the Thrau Empire for themselves. Thanks to archeological reclamation and reverse engineering, the Saryan technology jumps nearly three hundred years ahead.

2067: Colonization charters are drawn up for Mars, Europa, Ganymede, Titan, and Enceladus. To avoid conflict over extraterrestrial territory and colonization, the UN imposes the Sector Law, stating that no nation can own territory greater than 200 square kilometers outside their home sector. This also serves to codify the cartographical terms “sector,” “system,” and “quadrant.”

When talking about the Krioli death toll from EHDS, you say 98% of surface life is killed, but does this include Krioli as well?

Well, it's perhaps more accurate to say that 98% of surface species suffered extinction as a result of the EHDS (which I just realized is pronounced like The AIDS... wow, nice one, Arty. Real classy...)

That's horrific. A giant sandstorm kills off practically everything living on that planet? Mang...

But it DOES have an awesome name! Evil Howling Death Storm! Sounds like something Quentin Tarantino would cook up.

More of a blizzard/ice storm, but you're not far off the mark if you're thinking something along the lines of the Dust Bowl.

Added quite a bit to the timeline. And we've still got a ways to go yet, and a lot of gaps to fill. We haven't even hit the Third Terran Space Age (present day) yet!

Yeah, the bit about the Tekks got me curious as well. They just... Appeared? So who engineered them? Also, a private company invented a faster-than-light drive but keeps it under wraps for thirty-four years? That's... Curious, to say the least.

Also, the 'Evil Howling Death Storm' elicits a grin every time I read it. That's a pretty apt description of what it actually is :).
