NON-TERRITORIAL FACTIONS
Fins Militant - Considered terrorists by some and heroes by others, this is a paramilitary organisation, composed mostly of Uplifts and Zoanthromorphic hybrids, dedicated to direct action against those considered to be threatening or directly damaging marine environments.
The Syndicate - Little is known about this shadowy organisation, except that they take no sides and are not supported by any major Terran polity. The Syndicate's agents appear to be baseline humans, dressed in black suits and ties at least a century out of fashion.
Legion of Steel Fists (TheGodlessUtopian) - A radically militant brigade of Robomarxist Mechanoid revolutionaries, they have carried out numerous attacks against polities that treat Mechanoids as second-class citizens. What makes this particular group especially effective is its extensive network of organic sympathisers.
Forces of God (FoG) - a millenarian Christian terrorist group, known to have carried out acts of terror against targets in diverse places in the Solar system, but most of their activity is in North America.
Science Union - A pan-Solar scientific body that serves as a tool of the CyberShadow. Of course, that isn't common knowledge. Publicly they have a "friendly" rivalry with the ICE.
Keep Mars Red (KMR) - An anti-terraforming organisation that forms in response to any plans to terraform Mars.
Institute for Cosmic Engineering (ICE) - dedicated to the advocacy of science and Extropianism. They have been implicated in a number of events, but nothing solid has been proven yet.
Star Kvlt - A new religious movement established in 2015, this is the faction now known to be responsible for the nuking of DC. Secretive, fanatical and obsessed with acquiring ancient artefacts, Kvltists are arranged into cell-like "covens", making them dangerous adversaries.
THE SOLAR SYSTEM
The following is a list of colonised planetary bodies in the Solar System, divided among the different zones of SolSys. the population numbers for bodies without major colonies represent the maximum population supportable with 22nd century technology.
INNER SYSTEM
Although torch-ships are destined to become the long-distance spacecraft of choice in the Solar system, the inner regions are opened up by relatively simple Solar Steamers, which even small and inexperienced factions have no trouble acquiring. Under steady acceleration, the travel time for a typical model is 25 days multiplied by (square root of distance in Astronomical Units), where 1 AU = 93,000,00 miles. Like torch-ships, Solar Steamers have no atmospheric or surface landing capability.

Base Production: 700e+300r per turn
Major Phenotypes: Baseline humans, Mechanoids, variant humans (partially Mars-adapted), native Martians (genetically reconstructed)
ASTEROID BELT
A rich vein of resources for the Solar system, the asteroid belt is also home to an independent-minded Belter culture, who don't mind trading with "flat-minded" planet dwellers, but will happily drop asteroids on them if they present a credible threat to their autonomy.
[SPOIL]Ceres: 109 million
Pallas: 34.2 million
Vesta: 32.6 million
Juno: 6.8 million[/SPOIL]
JUPITER
The largest gas giant, its strong gravity and storm-wracked atmosphere rules it out as a place to call home for all but the truly desperate. Those properties also make the clouds decks of Jupiter a fascinating study for scientists, and its sheer size making it an excellent military exercise and proving ground.
Io: No permanent population (better places to live nearby!) - Adventure World
Europa: No permanent population - Nature Reserve
Ganymede: 3.4 billion

Enceladus: 31 million
Tethys: 140 million
Dione: 157 million
Rhea: 293 million
Titan: 3.3 billion (+ native life forms)

URANUS
Beyond the range of Solar Steamers, this is truly the heart of the outer Solar system. A torch-ship accelerating/decelerating at 1G can make the trip in around 12 days. A calculator can be found here.
[SPOIL]Puck: 2.9 million
Miranda: 28 million
Ariel: 168 million
Umbriel: 172 million
Titania: 313 million
Oberon: 290 million[/SPOIL]
NEPTUNE
The last major fueling stop before frontier territory. For this reason anyone with a pressing reason to leave civilisation will head here.
[SPOIL]Proteus: 21 million
Triton 920 million
Nereid: 14.5 million[/SPOIL]
KUIPER BELT
The last major outposts of civilisation. Their sheer distance both from the inner Solar system and each other allows a great amount of divergence.
Pluto-Charon: 167 million
Haumea-Namaka-Hi'iaka: 289 million
Makemake: 63 million
Eris-Dysnomia: 212 million
OORT CLOUD
The Oort Cloud is the furthest reach of known space; there are an unknown number of very small non-aligned settlements (usually disgruntled exiles from further inside SolSys, but there also military and research outposts among other things) not likely to have a huge impact on the game, but you never know...
PLANET X
Practically unexplored due to orbital distance. Is known to have five moons, one of which is highly suited to colonisation.
NEARBY STARS
The following is a list of nearby stars with potentially habitable planets - these are the targets for humanoid colony ships. More details can be obtained by sending a probe, which is probably a good idea to do before sending off a colony ship.
Nemesis: A brown dwarf star which very slowly orbits Sol at a great distance. Has three planets, including a Venus-like world that is amenable to terraformation. (1.5 Ly)
Proxima Centauri: A red dwarf star with a complete planetary system, including two habitable tidally-locked planets, one more marginal than the other. (4.22 Ly)
Alpha Centauri: A pair of Sun-like stars. Few large planets due to the orbital dynamics of binary pairs, but both stars have quite a few rocky and icy bodies orbiting them, including a habitable planet with rings, a large moon and significant axial tilt. (4.40 Ly)
Barnard's Star: A red dwarf star with three tidally-locked desert planets that can be terraformed. (5.94 Ly)
Wolf 359: A red dwarf star with a tidally-locked habitable planet - no terraforming required! Of all the nearby extrasolar planets, this is probably the big prize. (7.8 Ly)
Epsilon Eridani: Perhaps the nearest star system like that of Sol, this one has now been discovered to have no less than two Earth-like planets orbiting it. (10.5 Ly)

SOLAR SYSTEM
A new planet has been discovered in the Solar system, thanks to the Extremely Wide Baseline Interferometric Infra Red Telesecope built on the far side of the Moon and run by the Institute for Cosmic Engineering. Named Planet X, analysis of observation data indicate the presence of five large moons.
The Belter Union has lodged an offical complaint with the governments of Earth via the Solar Council over so-called "backyard colonists" polluting the spaceways of the Solar system with debris and fragments from their often-rickety vessels. Most of these colonists are small groups or individuals seeking a better life on their own terms in the outer Solar system, using "kit-ships" built at home in fabbers according to pirated or open-source plans. Debris is already a well-known problem in the inner solar system and the orbital space of Earth, but it is spreading.
Exo-archeologists on Mars have unearthed a massive underground complex buried under Syrtis Major Planum. "It's a very exciting find" enthused Professor Danielle Mishima, the leader of the dig team from Mariner Valley University. "We weren't expecting to find something so big so soon". When asked about the possibility of Archeotech, her tone became more cautious; "Depending on the exact age of the site, there could be a considerable amount, but it's doubtful that much of it will be easy to identify let alone still be functional".
The Mercury Energy/Resources Collective announces completion of the Intra-Solar Mass Driver (ISMD), a titanic electromagnetic accelerator stationed above Mercury, designed to deliver cargo pods to any other body of the Solar system at high speeds with a minimal to non-existent escort. The ME/RC feels confident that they can now adequately satisfy present and projected future demands for antimatter.
AMERICAS
Celebrations for the living and moments of silence for the dead unfolded across North America as the region achieves its tenth year of peace under the Maryland Agreement. The North American Federalist Party held their usual demonstrations outside Marispatrian military outposts, as well as the Headquarters of any businesses or organisation seen by the Party to be advancing anti-Federalist Marispatrian ambitions.
In the Republic of Texas, snap elections have been called in order to replace the disasterous Neidermyer presidency. Initial polls indicate the Pro-Human Party will win, with the Federalist Party coming a close second. The Pro-Human candidate has expressed concerns over the current management of the non-human population.
The widening of the Panama Canal by the Amero-Caribbean Solidarity continues apace, in cooperation with the ME/RC in their pan-Solar "Antimatter for Peace" outreach/development program. As part of the project, a number of pure antimatter devices have been detonated and work now focuses on shoring up the resulting excavations.
The Axis of Borelia continues with its program to exploit methane clathrate deposits in the Arctic Ocean, despite worldwide criticism and direct action by the Fins Militant. The Axis cites energy independence as their motivation, but this explanation has been criticised as inadequate.
AFRICA
Members of a Star Kvlt coven went on a rampage in the city of Libreville, Gabon, killing 30 and injuring 140 and damaging homes and public facilities in the process. Although the response of Cameroon Pact Civil Defence was rapid, the coven struck without warning and melted away quickly, but not before their leader was fatally shot and taken into custody. He allegedly uttered these words before expiring; "La mort n'est qu'un porte. Le temps est, mais une fenêtre. Je reviendrai". Although not the first Star Kvlt act in Africa, it has been the first to afflict the Cameroon Pact.
Residents of Nairobi, Kenya have been deluged with rogue "Madverts", which have overspilled from the Khartoum Confederation where they are endemic. "They get everywhere, and they noisily hawk all kinds of shit, some of it I don't even know what it does" says Amali Harkness, a resident "they never stop. They don't seem to understand the concept of 'not interested'" Some residents have taken to using them for target practice, but that doesn't seem to dent their numbers much.
The Nigerian city of Abuja was briefly shaken by a 5th magnitude earthquake, the sixth such earthquake to happen in the area over the past of couple years. Seismologists are uncertain as to the exact nature of these quakes, but what from what they can tell, they originate very deep within the Earth's crust, and have seismic signatures inconsistent with typical earthquakes.
EURASIA-PACIFIC
The South Pacific Alliance received an official visit from the Dwellers of the Abyss, to discuss the possibility of establishing an embassy. The Dweller envoy said "Now that we are known to the Drylands, it is imperative we have a reliable avenue of communication. We seek a piece of the Drylands in perpetuity as a permanent connection between our different parts of the world". When asked about the possibility of embassies elsewhere, the envoy replied "I cannot say" and did not elaborate further.
The Civil Projects Office of the City of Pannotia was bombed yesterday, and today the Forces of God claimed responsibility. They say the attack was intended as a "warning" not to "rebuild" the "Tower of Babel", or as the citizens of Pannotia know it as, Project ACROS, a design being researched for a photocell climber space elevator which promises to be a cheaper way of accessing space than more conventional anchored space elevator designs.

I'm still waiting for Revolutionary Sandwich and TelevisionIncarnate's choices regarding Alignment and characterisation of their factions, but enough talk! Have at you!
