A corral for my thoughts, the things are slippery buggers... ooo, look at the kitty.
First off, a list of general hull classes.
Destroyer: 30kilotons, only used by Etharia. Note, its named for a class of heavy twin engined piston fighters once used to hunt bombers. P-61 Black Widow and UK Mosquito are real world examples, just used differantly.
Dominator: 20kilotons, the MSF's answer to the destroyer, it's an upgunned tender designed for command and control puropses
Striker: 10kilotons, the largest spacecraft outside the ESC and MSF's monsters, standard tenders are also of this mass
Attacker: 5kilotons, the backbone of most fleets, differant designs can fullfill just about any role, from space combat to planetary bombardment
Fighter: 3kilotons, a light hull generally used for patrol and escort duties, but capable of frontline combat when nessicary, typically the smallest fleet craft availible
Pursuer: 1000tons, the smallest instersteller craft, generally used for scouting, convoy raids and anti-piracy work, these craft tend to avoid large engaments as much as possible
Intercepter: 500-650tons, small STL craft that are lightly armed and generally unsuitble for anything beyond orbital defence, however there is a growing trend towards building tenders to carry them outsystem where they are used to bolser a fleet's missile defence systems, hence "intercepter"
Hunter: an intercepter varient used by the MSF, hunters replace the usual anti-missile lasers with a single anti-ship laser, hunters are used in wolfpack tactics to harass and damage larger ships, however, extreamly limited combat endurace and lack of proper defences lead many to doubt their utility

Sexy, sexy laser calculations. Also, the different hull types seem rather interesting, and seemingly do not reflect sea-going warships, which is nice.

Yep, most space "navies" are actually decended from the nations' air forces', not all, but most. Also, I officially found a design system that fit my style but doesn't require me to do everthing by hand.

I have also found that I can't build I 550ton ship that can do what I want the Naginata to do, which is just as well since I intended it to be 650 anyway. Now I can start statting my crazy ideas... Unless I can grab a copy of Spore on sunday, then you won't see me for awhile...

A ship called the Naginata, eh? Is it a long range battleship with devastating accuracy, and powerful weaponry?

Naginata's are more like piranas, they swarn around you and nibble you to death, I have the stats posted for it. Yep, Sept 4 for australia, Sept 5 for UK, and Sept 7 for US. It surprises me that no one here talks about it, the ultimate creation game... *drools* I just hope I can find a copy.

Awesome, yet FAIL.

The tactics Matans use were based on the idea that certan type of armor could only defeat certan threats, ceramics against kinetics and ablatives (shuttle heat shield) against lasers. Because of that Matan infantry would carry both weapons to minimize defense potencial. If this stuff is as strong as its stated to be then its strong then ballistics ceramics, but it has the conductive proporties of steel, which is one of the better laser absobing materials. So, a buckypaper composite suit of armor would take away my conveint excuse to use both shell firing and beam weapons. Ah well, back to the original plan of lasers slowly replacing coilguns.

Frankly, I'm a bit late coming in here, but I feel compelled to ask: you stated that the maximum range of the laser rifle is 200m. I wonder - if that's the maximum effective range at which it penetrates armour, wouldn't you be better off using some sort of projectile that'll kill stuff at greater distances than that, either through penetration or some sort of explosive effect? 'Course, said projectile would have to defeat 10mm of aluminum... But still, 200m effective range doesn't strike me as that much for a rifle.
Also, do the point defence lasers work in-atmo? Because that would be a pretty sweet range for an atmospheric PD-laser.

Re: Notes
Well, the rifle range is kinda off, since thats its range in vaccume that it could penetrate a starship's amor. Atmo range would be a bit shorter, but it could penetrate infantry armor much better. I'd say 500-600m as a guess. I remember reading that most infantry fights happen at ranges of around 300m, so I don't see it as a problem.
Yep, that's why PD use bluelight instead of UV like bigger models. They're designed to fire at missiles in atmo and give fire support to drop troops. The only problem is that planetary defence models can strike a ship in orbit up to 1000km from the surface...
