Introduction (what is Children of Man?)

Post by Somes J »

Children of Man is my attempt to put a new spin on the Midaeval fantasy genre, although in the end what I came up with was not Midaeval, and it is perhaps problematic to call it fantasy (let's say if KJ Parker's The Engineer Trilogy counts as fantasy, ChoM probably should too). The premise of Children of Man is inspired by Nemo Ramjet's All Tomorrows (which unfortunately doesn't seem to be available on the web anymore). The basic parameters of the ChoM setting are as follows.

1) ChoM world is an alternate world where humanity has experienced an evolutionary radiation, diverging into a number of seperate species or subspecies. Humans exist on ChoM world, but they share space with their divergently evolved descendant species. Hence the name of the setting (which, I'll admit, is a bit cheesy but it was the best thing I could come up with).

2) There is no magic. Many of the inhabitants of ChoM world may believe in magic, just as primitive people on Earth do, and there is technology left over from a more advanced past era that may be mistaken for magic by ChoM world's present inhabitants, but the laws of nature on ChoM world are really the same as they are in our world.

I hope that clarifies the basics. For more information, see the timeline, list of races, and other sections in this forum.

PS, as of 2/21/09 the forum is as yet empty. I should have some articles ready by later today or tommorrow. Links will be added in this section as the new sections become available.

I certaintly like the concept of humanity evolving into various offshoots. What kind of offshoots are you planning to have?

Well, there is a rough draft in the Worldbuilding section that talks about some of them. Link.
