The Japanese Star Republic

Post by Czernobog »

The Japanese Star Republic
Full name: The Japanese Star Republic
Systems governed: 13 (not counting colonies)
Language: Japanese, English
Population: 60 billion
Government Type: Federal Republic
Motto: ‘For Nation, for President’

History:

The Japanese Star Republic began its origins when the New Japanese Empire of Old Earth sent four great colony ships through a graveddy into the unknown void, forcibly recruiting and intending to get rid of dissidents that were opposed to its neo-Fascist, hyper-militaristic government. The New Japanese Empire also sent four military ships to watch the colonists and ensure that they never got off the planet, but they never arrived owing to urgent military requirements and a bureaucratic error. They arrived at a terrestrial planet orbiting a main sequence star which was designated, with typical governmental soullessness, Osaka-2. The 400,000 colonists soon built up a decent amount of infrastructure, and as terraforming of the atmosphere and biosphere began to make the environment more habitable to humans, the seeds of the colonists' rebellion during the Terran Diaspora War were sown. Sitting at the very edge of explored space, the colonists were independent-minded, and were not pleased at all with the passing of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1051A.

This, together with the pro-representation riots in Starkland, threw the colonists into a dilemma. Should they be loyal to the Emperor of Japan who had abandoned them to die and the UN who oppressed them, or should they rebel and take the future into their own hands? Eventually, the pro-rebellion side won out, and independence was declared on 10th December Earth Time. The Japanese Star Republic was born.

The UN sent a fleet, which arrived 15 days later, but was temporarily disabled by a freak solar flare, which allowed the colonists' small military to prepare. It was a bloody, hard-fought battle, that lasted for eighteen Earth months of guerilla warfare and hit-and-run attacks on the UN navy, but finally the UN fleet moved away from the system into the nearby (in the graveddy network) Starkland system, seeing it as simply not worth the bother.

Ryujo Kaitomara, President of the Republic, was relieved greatly when the Terran Diaspora War ended 5 years later. The struggle for independence was over, and he no longer needed to worry about UN influence. However, he was soon forced to join the OAS, as he was in their sphere of influence, something that caused him a great deal of consternation.

The history of the Japanese Star Republic contains a long-standing rivalry with the Duban and Xeno-Chimps, as the powers are relatively close to one another, and have fought several wars against each other. They also have a mutual defence treaty with the American Space Planets.

The current President is Takahiro Nakamura.

Government

The Head of State of the Republic is the President, and the Vice-President is the Head of Government. The Constitution is based on that of the USA, but has many differences, most notably the lack of a right to keep and bear arms, although gun ownership is allowed with special government permits. Free speech is allowed, as long as it is not inciteful to violence. Other than that, the structure of the Government is based on that of the USA, which the Republic's founders saw as a worthy model to emulate.

The congress-equivalent is known as the Diet, and has 130 members - ten for each system that is part of the Republic. There is also a Supreme Republican Court, that is responsible for passing the law. There are two main parties in the Diet - the Liberal Democrats (left-leaning) and the Socialist Democrats (right-leaning).

The Republic currently contains 13 member planets, with a large number of colonies, protectorates and such.

Culture

The culture of the Republic has changed greatly since the days of its colonisation. Although manga and anime are still widely popular, live action TV and film has also gained a large viewership, and the world of New Kyushu, close to Osaka-2, has gained something of a reputation as a centre for live-action film-making. The Republic's styles of music are even more eclectic.

Schooling is mostly state-run, although some of the larger universities are owned by corporations, and begins at the age of 5, continuing (counting higher education) until the age of 21 (although schooling can be stopped at any point after the age of 18). Humans make up 99% of the population, and aliens are relatively unknown to the populace.

The people of the Republic are traditionally thought of as grim, dour and obsessed with duty, and this viewpoint is correct in some cases, but the Republic's younger members are just as obsessed with fashion and the concept of 'cool' as many other human polities.

Techno and bubble-pop are wildly popular, but so is Burning Metal and classic rock, which has quite a large fandom. Baseball is the national sport, with Soccer close behind it in popularity.

Military

The Republic has quite a large military, of over 5 million people, with 8 million reservists, due to their rivalry with and proximity to the Duban. Everybody is required to go through basic training upon the age of 21, and must take an annual refresher course until the age of 50. This refresher course lasts six months and refreshes things like holding a weapon, firing, and so forth.

The Republic's military is divided into the RJA (Republican Japanese Army), RJSF (Republican Japanese Starfleet) and the RJSPC (Republican Japanese Special Forces Corps). The military also has a constitutionally defined statement to 'seek and destroy threats to the Japanese Republic and way of life in pre-emptive self-defence measures'.

The RJA alone has many parts, most notably the RJOSF (Republican Japanese Orbital Strikeforce), a force of power-suited soldiers whose weapons include rail-rifles and tactical nuclear launchers, designed to fight their way through the thickest battles and fortifications and come out alive, if not unhurt.

The RJSF is the Japanese starfleet, lead by their mighty flagship Yamato, a name that strikes fear into the heart of many C-WEB ship captains.

And finally the RJSPC is the black-ops, special forces section of the Republican Japanese military, and has close ties with the RJIA (Republican Japanese Intelligence Agency).

System and Capital World

Osaka-2 is the only habitable world in its system, orbiting a main-sequence star, and was thus chosen as the original colony world by the four colony ships that founded the colony that would become the Republic. It has no moons, instead having rings like those of Saturn.

Osaka-2 has four large continents: Masuda, Nippon, Kagoshima and Miyazaki.

The Osaka-2 system is also home to a large belt of asteroids that severely impedes travel and communication across the system.

You have ruled this galaxy for ten thousand years.
You have little of account to show for your efforts.
Order. Unity. Obedience.
We taught the galaxy these things.

And we shall do so again.
