Ship Spec Thread for Multiverse Crossover Series "Undiscovered Frontier"

Post by Steve »

For the multiverse setting seen in "A Time For Heroes" and Undiscovered Frontier Season 1 "Seeking the Past". The general specs I have in mind for the ship classes focused upon in those stories, will add more as it occurs to me. Mostly here for the handful of posters who actually read them. ;)

I recommend you not read further if you've yet to finish "A Time For Heroes". There are spoilers here for that story.

Description

The Kelley-class scout vessel is a Darglan-designed starship made to accomplish multiple missions in support of their Emergency Facilities. The vessel has a relatively limited range and durability as a drawback, making it as reliant upon the Facility - or some other central logistical support base - as it is upon their operation. However, due to this de-emphasis on cruising range, the ship is a versatile mission platform capable of diverse functions such as interstellar reconnassiance, vital materials or personnel transport, rescue operations, logistics support, and anti-piracy combat patrol,.

It has four internal decks. All decks are used for access to various vital components on the ship's surface while each deck tends to have a primary function. Deck 1 is the location of the ship's command bridge, an adjacent small transporter room, and a room meant for use by the ship commander. Deck 2 has the Sickbay and command crew quarters. As the largest deck, Deck 3 is the location of Main Engineering, Warp Drive Nacelle Access, Deflector Control, the Ship's Armory, and crew and passenger housing, as well as the main Cargo Bay. Deck 4 is the location of more Cargo Bays and Shuttle Bay as well as additional crew quartering.

Description:

Following first contact in S5T3 and the near loss of the Kelley and Kirby, the New Liberty and Facility Councils realized that their small force would need a vessel with greater punch in case of potential threats. The result was the Koenig. The basic hullform of the Kelley was adapted and merged with ex-Starfleet engineer and designer Carlton Farmer's knowledge of an experimental Federation design with a similar principle: put as much firepower as possible into as small and armored a hull as possible.

The particle pulse cannons found in the Kelley were replaced by much larger weaponry based on nuclear-disruptor, or "phaser" as Farmer insisted on calling it, weaponry, with the advanced fabrication systems in the Darglan Facility permitting recreation of the same focusing crystals that made the Federation's new pulse cannon technology work with phaser weaponry. An extra aft torpedo launcher was added and an extra phaser array to round out Koenig's firepower; even though on paper its main battery is the same number of cannon emitters, in practice the cannons mounted are capable of far higher outputs resulting in the Koenig having over three times the firepower of a Kelley-class vessel.

This shift to a pure combat role had a cost. The multi-mission role of the Kelley's hull was sacrificed to accommodate the needs of having an armor plate over the normal hull, an extra shield generator and energy generation systems, the larger torpedo magazine, and other necessary alterations to the internals to make the combat systems work. The result is a ship that is built entirely around the combat role, either as a heavy escort, a hunter-killer, or an attack ship capable of damaging larger ships with its powerful gun battery. One piece of equipment that did remain was the Darglan model cloaking device, which operates on similar principles to the Romulan and Klingon cloaks of S5T3.

No other ships of this class have been built. A modified variant is being put into service by the Allied Systems, to be known as the Trigger-class, which has similar combat capability but a slower warp system.

As of the founding of the Allied Systems, the Koenig was assigned the hull number 1700 and assigned as an attached support vessel to the Aurora. The current commanding officer is Commander Zachary Carrey.

Description:

When the Darglan left the Facility of Earth H1E4 they placed two vessels in it. One was a completed multi-mission scout that became the Kelley; the other was known as the "Emergency Vessel", but due to unknown factors it was not finished before the Darglan put it into place and left the Facility. The ship in question was later found by Caterina Delgado. After months of only slight work to examine the ship, the recruitment of Starfleet starship builder Carlton Farmer and legendary Starfleet engineer Montgomery Scott permitted the Facility to resume construction of the ship.

Farmer was in charge of the construction, working with a staff of almost every data-infused engineer or construction specialist the Facility and New Liberty's populations could muster. Design decisions for how to fill out the vessel were made with the Council and, in particular, an ad hoc committee overseen by Julia Andreys, with Thomas Barnes and Jarod contributing heavily due to their experience with Darglan technology. At Julia's suggestion, and with the full backing of everyone present, the ship was given the name Aurora after the Roman goddess of the dawn.

It was known that the ship would be the flagship for their organization, and would be considered when the negotiations began to form the Allied Systems, so the design was ultimately not as combat orientated as it might have been in favor of considering other mission possibilities, though it made up for it by sophistication in its systems. The main armament is nevertheless worthy of a capital scale starship in the known Multiverse, particularly the enormously powerful bow and aft mounted plasma pulse cannons based on the most sophisticated Darglan weapon technology found in the Facility's databases. Farmer applied Starfleet armament principles to the design, adding numerous phaser strips and banks to the hull and a concept that Starfleet had turned away from previously; turreted phaser emitters, pulse cannon types, to give the ship extra punch along its long sides. Torpedo launchers were mounted in three spots on the hull; two in the dorsal bow area between the ship's bow and the bridge, four in the ventral hull above the deflector dish, and two in the ship's stern below the space that was to become the fighter recovery deck. Another innovation agreed upon was the emplacement of both rapid-firing light phaser arrays on spots of the hull and adapting Darglan light starship weapon technology for particle interceptor turrets, providing point-defense against enemy fire or light enemy craft. To power this multitude of weaponry required the installation of two extra dedicated naqia reactors and a distributed series of capacitors and phaser cores across the ship, backed by the ship's backup fusion reactors. A sophisicated targeting computer was installed, separate from the ship's main computers, to direct the ship's weapons fire at the direction of the tactical officers on the bridge.

Since the Aurora would be needed for multiple mission profiles, internal spaces were arranged for other roles and facilities provided for the crew so the vessel could have long patrols without requiring revictualing or necessitating crew leave. Hologram chambers based on Darglan technology and Farmer's knowledge of Federation holography allow for holodecks that provide both necessary roles like training or analysis or leisure activities for the crew and guests. More conventional crew facilities are also available. Science labs and equipment are located in the ship for use in operations where close scientific analysis of anything - be it a lifeform, technology, or physical matter - is possible for the purpose of the mission, eliminating the need to send such material to dedicated labs. Storage areas are set aside for the Aurora to carry supplies and materials beyond its own stores, although not nearly to the level of a dedicated transport but rather for specialized transport. Knowledge of alien species that have different atmospheric, pressure, and gravity requirements have led to sections of the ship being capable of independent life support and environmental conditions.

The Aurora was spaceworthy and ready for final compartment work when the Dalek invasion of the Facility forced its evacuation and destruction. With Farmer's death during that incident, it fell on Montgomery Scott to finish fitting the ship out, with collusion from several officials of the forming Allied Systems. The decision was made to expand the landing bays for the shuttles and runabouts the [i}Aurora[/i] was expected to carry to permit the ship to refuel and repair, in drydock conditions, one scout-sized starship (currently the Koenig is the vessel assigned to Aurora in this capacity). Additionally further space was set aside for use as a hanger deck, launch tubes, and recovery deck for a contingent of fighters that would give the Aurora the ability to further protect itself from light anti-starship craft with its own fighter screen (the ship's air group is also to include some craft capable of strike missions in support of other operations). Plans to fit hypervelocity coilguns to the primary hull by certain military authorities were thwarted by Scott, who successfully showed the ship could not easily mount such heavy armament with everything else it was carrying. Scott also fought off attempts to have the ship partially dismantled to study aspects of Darglan technology in its initial construction.

Following the official foundation of the Allied Systems, Alliance President Henry Morgan and Chairman of the Defense Staff Admiral Maran decided to place the Aurora under their direct command. As it does not fit with any of the Alliance star navies and space forces, it was considered best to have the Aurora operate independently performing duties that the Alliance President and his chief military advisor deemed essential. The Aurora was assigned the hull registry 1701 by the Alliance Stellar Navy. Command of the ship was given to Robert Dale, with Julia Andreys as his First Officer and Montgomery Scott as Chief Engineer. The rest of the "Kansas Seven" from the Facility are all stationed to the vessel as command crew, with the exception of Zachary Carrey who is primarily commander of the Koenig.

Ok well this clarifies a couple of things, but it basivally lines up with what I had imagined.

The only thing that has my eyebrows raised is the speeds. So... If I recall correctly, the warp scale is logarithmic, sort of, with 1 being lightspeed, 4 being 1000 times lightspeed, 9 being 8 lightyears per day (EDIT: which is 2920 times lightspeed, I can do basic multiplication) and 10 being infinity miles an hour.

It is an absurd system, I grant you, but under that system, 9.99937 sounds massively faster than 9. Is that what is intended or, since 10 is infinity, does a mere five decimal places only get you up to say 4000 times lightspeed?

Now incidentally, as one of the handful you mentioned, I would personally be less interested in the ships and more interested in knowing a bit about how this transcosmic alliance works. In TGG I gathered it was Space America, but with it being established within a year it seems like this one wpuld have to be, at most, more of a space NATO, but it seems to have presidents and ministers and the like. So, roughly, how does that work?

I'm not big on the warp scales mentioned. It's implied they've been rewritten a couple of times in-universe - hence the Warp 10 = infinity rule, but the alt-future of the TNG finale having "Warp 13". Unless I have a compelling in-story reason, I'm not going to focus on raw distances as much, just general behavior of various systems. Warp drive is slower than hyperdrive in general, unless transwarp is fully developed, for instance. And point-to-point drives will come up here and there.

The fact that the ADN is seen as "Space America" tells you how much I failed in TGG, since I was really wanting to "internationalize" it. Ministerial figures who were non-American, including Chancellors and Presidents, military commanders who were likewise non-American, etc.

As for this, the UAS is loosely federal. Members still have their own militaries and will for a while - we saw this with the Mayala in 1-02. I will be drawing up "Alliance" ship designs for their unified forces over time for this thread.

I imagine the system is a bit more European, perhaps closer to France's system; the President has quite a bit of authority, but there will be a Chancellor or Premier (haven't named the position yet) who is responsible to the legislature and directs legislative agenda.

I admittedly haven't thought out the UAS as much as I did the ADN, since the focus of UF isn't so much the grand astropolitics seen in TGG but space opera adventure.
