The War of Korean Unification

The War of Korean Unification came about due to the End of World War Three, and the dismantling of the New Soviet Union. North Korea had proven that it was steadily becoming irrelevant in the modern world. The New Soviet Union propped it up for a short time, but eventually it became clear that the whole rotting structure was in danger of imminent collapse. The 16 year old Boy General of Korea, otherwise known as General Ryung, decided to end this decline by a quick bout of conquest.

Nuclear missiles were put on courses for Osaka, Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Boy General intending to annihilate those Japanese cities to launch his war. Honolulu and Seoul were also targeted by missiles, and would be part of the second strike.

On December 7th, 2115, the Boy General hatched his plan. In his mad dreams, he saw a Korea that ruled from Japan to the Mediterranean, and believed that victory would be easy. That couldn't be further from the truth. The missile aimed at Osaka was the only missile that actually hit, the rest taken down by ABM. Nevertheless, it was a severe blow to Japanese morale, with 250,000 civilians killed.

Minutes after and hours before the next missiles were to be launched, USNA kill-sats and bombers carrying fusion bombs annihilated the missile silos, preventing a second launch.

North Korean artillery badly damaged Seoul as underground tunnels were opened, the North Korean army pouring out to rampage and murder. It was followed by a landing at the southern coast of North Korea by the USMC and Continental Army as fusion bombs took out many military bases and Pyongyang itself, only the Boy General and his closest advisers surviving in a nuclear-proof bunker.

Meanwhile, the North Korean army was met by South Korean forces advancing across the DMZ, and in a series of climactic battles was quickly reduced to a broken rabble that remained as a bandit group for years after the war.

The Boy General and his advisers were found in their bunker, the advisers killed and the Boy General committing suicide with a pistol as soldiers lead by USNA General Alexian Eliphas broke down the door to his chamber.

North Korea was officially abolished and the war ended on February 19th 2116, and it took a good 20 years for South Korea (now simply the Republic of Korea) to rebuild the former country.

Military analysts point to North Korea's stagnation in military technology as the cause of their defeat; they had stagnated for decades, and their best gear was from the 2070s, 50 years before the war, and had gone unmaintained since that time. Others point to the Boy General's insanity (which was the cause of the war itself) as the reason for its defeat. However, it is clear that North Korea's fall came from many factors, not all of which can be readily identified.

Suffice to say that it took a couple of assassinations to get him in power.

He did have total control, and it was largely arrogance and ambition that caused him to fire the missiles. Some of his advisers did also try to use him, but they soon met mysterious 'accidents'.

How can a thirteen year old kid have total control over a nuclear-armed country? Why did they allow him to gain undisputed power? What made them follow him? It's your verse, nothing really stops you from having a barely-teenage kid who's almost as old as you go on become undisputed master of North Korea and launch a nuclear war that gets his country totally ruined, it just depends on how realistic or unrealistic or believable or unbelievable your verse is supposed to be, how serious you want it to be, or un-serious, or Heretic-level funniness, or just plain bizarre. I think a thirteen year old ruler of Korea instigating a regional nuclear war would be better off as being played for humor or something not-entirely-serious or sane or sensible (because it's not).

Wait -- this Omega 'legion' has only 55 tanks? That's not enough to form even a single regiment! A regiment counts roughly 64 tanks (4 companies composed of 4 platoons of 4 tanks each). To draw a comparison, the US Army's 1st Armored Division counts three such regiments, not counting its support and artillery regiments. That's one division. If I had to make a guess I'd say 1st Armored is worth at least 192 tanks. And here you've got a legion, and it's only got a quarter of that number?

SCORPION

SCORPION is an international terrorist group founded in the 2080's by disaffected former members of the New Soviet Union, in hiding in Central Asia. Over the years, its ideology has mutated, forming into a loose group of terrorists of wildly disparate ideologies seeking nothing less than total world domination.

History

SCORPION was founded by Aleksandr Braginsky, Russian General and war criminal who escaped into Central Asia in 2081, vanishing from his prison cell during his trial. To this day, it is unknown how he escaped, but Alexei Nikolaivitch later vanished during the exact same trials. The Chief of Security for the prison was later fired for allowing these two war criminals to escape.

Nevertheless, SCORPION built up its numbers steadily, recruiting many disaffected former soldiers, including Special Operations expert Mikhail Rodion, AKA the Red Star. The organisation's first act of terrorism was a bombing in Istanbul, killing 39 people.

As the steady amount of terrorist attacks continued, there were no people or organisations claiming responsibility. The scorpion was still lurking in the shadows. In the spring of 2095 however, a clue was found - the body of kidnapped Russian politician Boris Leonid, with a note on it claiming that 'the Scorpion strikes'.

The Turkish police then discovered a cell of SCORPION in Turkey, purging it remorselessly. However, little information was gathered, with barely anything but the name of the organisation known. Later that year, in 2100, a revolt emerged in Kazakhstan. However, it was seen as no real threat, even after it spread to other Central Asian nations.

SCORPION was marshalling its forces for its most audacious plan yet, which was launched on July 3rd 2139.

Using a revolt in Western China as a cover, they hacked a Chinese kill-sat, using its ion beam to flatten Nanjing, killing hundreds of thousands. The world was at the brink of war before the Chinese intelligence services managed to find a document hidden in the headquarters of a SCORPION cell that referred to the plan.

As of yet, SCORPION is waiting for the moment to strike once more...

Ideology

SCORPION is concerned entirely with fostering global anarchy, using it as a means to eventually take over the world. For once the world collapses, the survivors will go to the most powerful organisation for guidance, which SCORPION intends to be itself. Its ideology does not resemble Communism any more, as it resembles Transhumanism mixed with some aspects of Fascism.

Its goal once it conquers the world is to prepare human civilisation to reach the 'Omega Point', a state of absolute perfection. They plan to go about this by creating a 'new race' superior to the old, and wiping out what remains of humanity.

Methods

SCORPION uses many means, ranging from societal infiltration to out-and-out guerilla warfare. It has dozens of puppets and dummy organizations - the Invictianist League, the Totalist Front, and many others, such as the B.L.A.N.D Corporation and the People's Revolutionary Struggle.

As well as its dummy organizations, SCORPION is divided into hundreds of cells, commanded by the Headquarters cell with little, if any, idea of their actual goals.

Its most overt strike was when it destroyed Nanjing with a hacked Chinese kill-sat, even as it steadily infiltrated the Chinese government for its most audacious and overt plan ever, which it plans to launch soon. It is not for no reason that the Deathwatch Agency considers SCORPION to be 'the most dangerous threat to global freedom in our current time'.

Aircraft of the USNA

Shining Star Aerospace Fighter

The Shining Star is the premier fighter in the USNA's aerospace force. Fusion-powered, space and hypersonic capable, it is a good fighter in every way. However, what makes it unique is the lack of a pilot. The Shining Star is instead guided by a psuedo-sapient AI designed by Goldstein Microsystems, and merely has to be given a set of objectives, and given time (usually a few nanoseconds) to figure out how to perform them, and then attack. This makes it far more deadly and expendable, and often Shining Stars are coordinated by a central computer back at base, changing primary, secondary and tertiary objectives as the mission continues. This makes them a terrifying threat for any foe to face.

Stormfalcon Strategic Gunship

The Stormfalcon is a strategic gunship, designed to pound the enemy into nothingness from far away. As such, it is part of the Strategic Aerospace Force and the USNA's strategic deterrent. It can carry eight tactical or four strategic fusion missiles under its wings, a powerful deterrent for any foe to face. Its bomb bay can contain 50,000 pounds of conventional ordanance, and an equal weight in fusion bombs. Its power is widely adknowledged, and a Stormfalcon on patrol is enough to give any ruler pause.

B-99 Devastator Bomber

The Devastator is the mainstay of the USAEF's Strategic Aerospace Force, and for good reason. It has space and hypersonic capacity, and is powered by a fusion reactor, capable of carrying 25,000 pounds of conventional ordnance, as well as 8 tactical or 4 strategic fusion bombs. It lacks the Shining Star's psuedo-sapient AI, and as thus still needs to have a pilot. Its purpose is simple - complete tactical and strategic annihilation of the enemy, whoever they might be.

Iron Eagle Gunship

The Iron Eagle is the mainstay of the Continental Army''s HALO Drop Force, a force which can carry soldiers straight to the heart of the battlefield from low orbit, and often liaises with the USSF (United States Spacefleet). Its immense size, powerful engine and large cargo space enable it to carry approximately 150 soldiers, 10 Main Battle Tanks or a single Fairfax-pattern. Under its wings are four missile pods, each capable of carrying eight missiles, which can be tactical fusion weapons with an estimated firepower of 1-2 kilotons of TNT. It also includes a bomb bay capable of dropping 25,000 pounds of conventional ordnance, but no fusion bombs. It also includes a boarding ramp, so that tanks can get out of the immense gunship. Also under its wings are four anti-tank fusion cannons.

Skyhawk Transport Plane

The Skyhawk Transport Plane is commonly used by both the Continental Army and the USMC, and can carry 50 soldiers at maximum capacity, but no tanks. It has the ability to drop parachuted soldiers right into the thick of the fighting, and has a large boarding ramp.

Theodore Roosevelt-class Airborne Aircraft Carrier

The Theodore Roosevelt-class is a resurrection of the airship, thought obsolete until the 2110s, where modern technology made it feasible and cost-effective again. Instead of hydrogen, it uses helium, and the lift is also provided by fusion engines that take some strain off the structure. Modern materials also make it stronger and less flammable, to prevent incidents such as the Hindenburg incident from occurring again. The Theodore Roosevelt's mission is simple - to patrol America's skies, protecting it from any menace and with rapid reaction planes to thwart any attempted invasion. The Theodore Roosevelt-class can carry approximately 82 planes.

Hrm... I think a transport craft that can carry five MBTs or a single Baneblade can carry more than just a hundred soldiers. A C-5 Galaxy can carry 73 soldiers or 2 M1 Abrams tanks.

Why does it need a bomb bay? It's kind of odd that something that big (huge) would be used as a gunship, seeing as it's even bigger than strategic transport aircraft and would be a big target if it lands right in a battlefield. A dedicated transport could carry more men and machines, and a dedicated attack craft could carry more bombs and missiles. Of course, it depends on your guys' doctrines and stuff. The US brass might really like the idea of a bigass transport plane loaded with men and troops that's also able to fire missiles and bombs at people.

How often are these kiloton-yield weapons used?

You're right, I should change the number of men it can carry to 125, 150 or 175, whichever is more plausible. As for using it as a gunship, its designed to be a 'jack of all trades' meaning that a dedicated gunship would be even more powerful (and there is one - the Stormfalcon Strategic Gunship).

As for the kiloton-yield weapons, they're not used all that often, and conventional weapons are often used instead, although they're still there if the need for them is present.

The Continental Army

Equipment of the Continental Army

Fairfax-pattern Superheavy Battle Tank

The age of the superheavy tank returned in the 2120s, with the advent of cheap, durable and light alloys such as Adamantine (which was named somewhat self-consciously) and Durasteel. The decision was taken to name it after General Alexander Fairfax, who broke the Russian lines at Ottawa and Toronto before reclaiming Montreal for the fledgeling USNA.

The Fairfax-pattern is a fusion-powered superheavy battle-tank, that travels somewhat slower than the Eliphas-pattern due to its massive bulk. Its main turret contains a fusion cannon, and it has another with a railgun and a third with a group of missile pods. The Fairfax has a typical speed (on road) of 100 miles an hour, owing to its cutting-edge engines, the same as on the Eliphas. Its fusion cannon can devastate an office building, and so can its railguns and missile projectors.

Type-95 Armour

The Type-95 armour is a fully, enclosed battlesuit, that, while not as powerful as the X-25, is reliable and foolproof. It incorporates advanced polyfibers and non-Newtonian fluids that can reliably prevent the penetration of 50. cal bullets (of course, the soldier inside is often injured). Inside the helmet is a Heads-Up-Display that is linked with the soldier's weapon and also sensors that monitor his health, allowing it to display the amount of ammunition he has and how injured he is. It can also display enemies, potential hazards, maps of the surrounding terrain and so forth.

Mark-4 X-25 Powered Exoskeketal Suit

The Mark-4 X-25 Powered Exoskeketal Suit is the ultimate in protection. For one, the suit enables the wearer to take small-arms and machine-gun fire like nothing, giving him an undeniable advantage. It also features active camouflage systems, a HUD like that in the helmets of the Continental Army's soldiers, and integral weapons consisting of a Gatling gun and miniature guided missile pods, the latter missing from most marks of the X-25 suit. It also enables the wearer to survive orbital drops - whether via drop-pod, gunship or integral, computer-activated parachute.

300 are in use, 595 in storage, and 5 have been loaned to the Alpha Dogs, the USNA's premier special forces group.

M-156 Gyrojet Rifle:The M-156 fires explosive, mass-reactive gyrojet missiles at high velocity, which detonate inside enemies or obstacles. It incorporates an infrared/night-vision scope with an integral laser range finder and an X-ray display (that is, it can see enemies through walls).

Eliphas-pattern Main Battle Tank:
The Eliphas-pattern tank is named after General Alexian Eliphas, renowned for breaking the North Korean lines at the Battle of Pyongyang in the War of Korean Unification. It is a modular design, able to mount a Gatling-cannon, a Featherston-pattern maser beam projector, or a railgun on its turret. It is a rugged and reliable vehicle, with fusion cells giving it essentially unlimited range and next-generation engines giving it a maximum speed (on road) of 350 miles an hour.

Bradley-pattern APC:The Bradley-pattern APC is a rugged, reliable vehicle, named after James Daniel Bradley who reclaimed most of Canada in World War Three. It incorporates fusion cells, but lacks the Eliphas' engines, forcing it to follow up, transporting the infantry to garrison areas captured by the Eliphas.

Divisions of the Continental Army

The Omega Legion
'We are Legion.' - official motto of the Omega Legion.

The HALO Drop Force
'Death from Above' - motto of the HALO Drop Force.

The HALO (High Altitude Low Orbit) Drop Force is one of the most elite special forces groups in the world, above even SOCOM and second only to the Alpha Dogs. They number approximately 5000, and have 45 Iron Eagle gunships with which to descend. As their name implies, they specialise in HALO drops, most often in drop-pods or in the aforementioned Iron Eagle gunships. Their name strikes fear into the heart of tinpot dictators and terrorists the world over, and they have become truly legends, avenging angels of America's wrath.

The Alpha Dogs
'We're the Best' - motto of the Alpha Dogs.

SOCOM
'For country, for President, for honour' - SOCOM motto.

During the years of President John Daniel Lucien (the predecessor to Alfred F. Jones), a general movement was made to merge the various special operations groups of the Continental Army into one unified body, SOCOM (Standing for Special Operations Command), a move that was met with general displeasure from the USMC. SOCOM currently has around 15000 men for its special operations work, and three times that for the logistics required to support them in the field. SOCOM soldiers are known as Operatives, and there are certain influences from the Deathwatch Agency (most notably the cybernetics, which also extends to the HALO force and the Alpha Dog)s.

Are you describing multiple variants here? (one with fusion cannon, one with railgun and one with missiles) or does one tank pack all three weapon systems?

Project Guardian

Project Guardian was originally devised as a way for the United States of North America to survive a nuclear apocalypse. Originally, self-sufficient 'Vaults' were conceived, but it became seen that they would be nothing but targets for nuclear missiles. Gigantic ocean cruise ships were also debated, but they fell victim to the same argument. Eventually, it was decided that immense colony ships would be built, with its occupants in cryonic slumber, until they reached a recently-discovered habitable planet around 61 Virginis.

Ten colony ships were built, hidden in the vastness of the Asteroid Belt, each able to hold 100,000 people, making for a maximum of 1,000,000 people that could be saved. However, Project Guardian did not stop there. 25 self-sufficient underground arcologies, dubbed 'Vaults' were built at undisclosed locations, serving partly as decoys and partly as protection for the remainder who would not be able to join the colony fleet. Each could hold a million people, and could survive a 50-megaton blast directly above.

As well as this, seven immense ships were built at hidden locations on the coast, fully submersible and self-enclosed, with a length of approximately 1.5 kilometers, each able to save 50,000 people.

Nothing was to be left to chance.

Indeed, the immense cost of Project Guardian was to be a bane for the American taxpayer for an entire decade, and ensured, some say, that John Daniel Lucien lost to Alfred F. Jones in the 2148 election. However, Alfred F. Jones defended the project in a recent speech, saying that 'in these troubled times, nothing is to be left to chance'.

In the latest iteration of the Doomsday Protocol, it is clear that Project Guardian is going to be essential in the survival of the American people from a conceivable thermonuclear war. It is hoped that its myriad creations never have to be used.

Even now, the military is preparing for the worst. But then, they always do that.

How do you build a 1.5 kilometer-long sea vessel in secret? Also, how extensive is humanity's space flight capabilities? How fast can they evacuate people from Earth (or elsewhere) and into the Asteroid Belt? Why do they need to go to 61 Virginis when Mars is already inhabited? Mars has people, Mars is nearer than the Asteroid Belt, and 61 Virginis requires a long voyage into space while everyone has to go into cryosleep (and mutate into space cannibals, or get into a space accident and die)?

Why did Mars get left out in this Doomsday Protocol because the faraway planet was more attractive? Are there any provisions at all to put refugees on Mars? The article doesn't mention Mars, or the Moon, at all.

Well, Mars and the Moon are within striking distance of the enemy - the outer solar system is outside striking distance as is interstellar space. There are provisions to put refugees on Mars, but they aren't mentioned.

With Mars and the Asteroid belt having such low populations, how significant are the planetary powers' influence over there?

Moving so many people to such big ships so far away in the Asteroid Belt before sending them off to the outer system or interstellar space beyond the enemy's reach might take some time to pull off. Won't the evacuation ships full of so many people be vulnerable while traveling from Earth to the Asteroid Belt? Isn't the Belt full of pirates and scavengers?

Also, how do they select the people who'll go to these giant ships and giant bunkers? Do they have lists of the smartest, most genetically-viable, and physically well-developed people chosen to be humanity's future hope? Or do they just take any survivor? Will their mine shafts and space shafts accommodate ten females for every male?

As for how they'll get there, any refugee ships will be accompanied by military spaceships. For the planetary powers' influence, it's weaker than on the Moon and Earth, but contact still exists and it's still pretty strong. For how they select them, it's the first option. And no to your last question.

Too bad.

General "Buck" Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?

Dr. Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.

Ambassador de Sadesky: I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor.

For rebuilding the population, you'd actually want 10:1 ratio of male:female, as polyandrous relationships have far greater chance of childbearing than polygamous relationships.

On the other hand, one woman with ten men can at most produce one child per 9 months and she'll really have to pop them out like a factory in order to produce a viable population impact.

Ten woman and one man can produce ten children, give or take, per 9 months, giving them some time to actually raise the kids without serious detriment to population growth.

Why would polyandrous relationships have more chances of childbearing than polygamous relationships? That's not how it worked in the Bible!

Isn't one guy and ten women going to have lots of problems down the line with the limited gene pool; ie the next generation's all half brothers and sisters.
Ah Brother! It's been too long!
