"After the crash, no-one had any orbital presence to speak of. Too much debris, too many autonomous SAT-SAT systems left out of control after the datavores ate their COM protocols. We'd shoot a small cube up and inevitably after a week or so it'd get eaten by something. That's no place for expensive hardware, let alone tin canned humans.

The Soviets were no different, we thought. Of course, Yamantau wasn't talking to us then. That was scary as hell, but in all honestly going incommunicado was the least we deserved. Considering what happened in Chernobyl, Sary Shagan and finally Moscow it was a small miracle we were still
there. I have no doubt that if they had done to us what we did to them, Skye would have gone for the gold codes and burned the world down.

Thank God for small favors and Kiralova, wherever she may be.

Where was I?

Ah.

Well, of course we thought that SICKLE was gone, done, digital dust. After all Saint Industries had designed the datavores to do the job Kroner had failed to do on MIR. And for a while it seemed they'd worked, rather too effectively perhaps - I don't think Charlie intended to bring the digital age to so abrupt an end - but still, job done. Balance restored, right? Then the dust settled and the Agency got hold of some telescopes and what we saw left us to wonder, if GLOBALGHOST really was dead, what was all that stuff moving through the four and five Lagrange points?"

CSW's history should be told through an arranged montage of these!

That is a very cool idea actually. Can't believe I never thought of it. Let me get on that...

"I'd say it was a plague that afflicted our nation, a plague of secrets and unaccountability. Concealed bases, clandestine agenda's, shadow companies and secret task forces, commando units beholden to no-one but their commandants, like the legions of old. For the defense of our well-being we had come to depend on codewords and conspiratorial conduct.

But a government of cloaks and daggers, as any Roman could tell you, ends with bare knives on the senate floor. To a mindset of secrets transparency is weakness and accountability an obstacle. Our great republic was founded by the people, for the people, but now it was wary of the people, because it knew that it could not itself be trusted. The Paragon, the Reapers, Tempest Null; a hundred hidden bases and a thousand covert projects. Secret budgets, secret courts, authority loopholes and parallel structures; no records, no disclosure, emergency powers- we will answer to the voices of the many once the crisis ends, but it's one crisis to the next, and there is no end.

Like all terrible diseases this malady afflicted the body of the host as well as the mind. Paranoia, once it sets in, is almost impossible to shake. I know this perhaps better than anyone. In the end not even Baylor could escape it. My dear John, he was the most honest and decent man I have ever known, but even he chose to fight plots with counterplots. Only far too late did he - did we - understand that adding fire to fire is no way to fight a coal seam blaze."

PUNISHED BAYLOR

A FALLEN LEGEND

Standing on the edge of the crater
Like the prophets once said
and the ashes are all cold now
No more bullets and the embers are dead
Whispers in the air tell the tales
Of the brothers gone
Desolation, devastation
What a miss we made, when it all went wrong

Watching from the edge of the circus
For the games to begin
Gladiators draw their swords
form their ranks for armageddon

I'm nuclear
I'm wild
I'm breaking up inside
A heart of broken glass
Defiled
Deep inside
The abandoning child

Standing on the edge of the underworld
Looking at the abyss
and I'm hoping for some miracle
To breakout to escape from all this
Whispers in the air tell the tales
of a life that's gone
Desolation, devastation
What a mess we made, when it all went wrong

I'm nuclear
I'm wild
I'm breaking up inside
A heart of broken glass
Defiled
Deep inside
The abandoning child

I'm nuclear
I'm wild
I'm breaking up inside
A heart of broken glass
Defiled
Deep inside
The abandoning child

EDIT: In all seriousness I'd love for BROKEN BAYLOR to end up becoming all METHODS UNSOUND just like Chaos Farley and all the others. In the end he or his former allies might even send some plucky recruit to take him out... in a way that's carefully orchestrated, heck with the commander of the hit being BAYLOR himself. It ends up with the new blood being given EXPOSITION and CUT SCENES on what happened before BROKEN BAYLOR gives up the ghost or allows himself to be taken in to become the fall guy (and probably allowing Ridley or whoever else to escape intact while he, all battered and broken and incapable, owns up to every dodgy thing he and all others did... in a way becoming accountable and doing something none of the Teagues and Farleys ever did!). Or Baylor's death is staged and he ends up in the hinterlands being this unending mercenary footsoldier, though no longer in the grand schemes just doing some anti-genocidal vigilantism in parts that were never "improved" by any of the epic "heroics" they did. Parts that remained plague by simple bandits and killers despite the grand ostensibly "noble" schemes of both Teague/Farley and the counter-plots of Baylor. Either way his reputation is destroyed, and it's a deliberate thing to make it appear that it's all "over" and maybe it is, but the fall allows other allies to either continue in a better way or just retire peacefully.

That top one sounds like CSW as gone to a more post-apoc genre?

I'm thinking so.

"Chaos Farley. That was his real name, by the way. Chaos. Farley. Think on that. Think on the kind of person, the kind of attitude it takes to name a baby boy 'Chaos'. Makes ya wonder, don't it? Did they scry his future? Was a gypsy witch involved? But they picked well. Farley was a walking contradition: career officer, esteemed brigadier general, killer of American troops, a patriot and a traitor to the republic, a turncoat and a loyalist and a double agent. Or was it triple? It's hard to keep count these days. And somehow he managed to be many of these things at the same time.

First time I bumped into Farley he ran the Paragon down near Costa Rica. Back then he liked to do test runs of his experimental tech against fresh American troops, see who came out on top. He was with MIDNIGHT until he wasn't - he sold Kroner down the river and even though he got dinged up for it something fierce he still lived to tell the story, which is more than I can say for most of the folk that got on the bad side of the mad Swedish bastard. SIX figured him for a spent resource after, but Farley proved a far cleverer son of a bitch than we gave him credit for.

When he resurfaced he ran with Chandra Gosely, and as we were busy with Sechalin and the Russians the crew those two put together hit it off. They worked themselves up from the FBI's Most Wanted to seats on the Shadow Trust, and before we knew it DC was taking itself apart. The two of them were a tag-team from hell - they seemed to know all the skeletons in everybody's closets. At the height of it Gosely's people ran the Agency and Farley took half the army with him. Skye had no choice when she rehabilitated him, there were troops on the Hill and the Trust was practically holding her hostage.

For a New York minute he was back on top, the goddamn Secretary of State - got his South Carolina mansion back, a bunch of money in back pay, medals, the whole nine yards. I think Farley knew it wasn't gonna last. He was out of the shadows, the tip of the sword, and every Beltway highbinder wanted to drink his blood from a chalice. His head was worth a billion dollars on the Exchange, and that's just not healthy.

Then Starr replaced DuPont as the Vice-President, and in one stroke all Farley's soldiers on Penn Avenue counted for fuck all. SIX cornered him at the Truman Building and I remember - hell, most of all I remember his
smile. There was me, Gold, Fetter and a squad of J-SOC guys with no compunctions about being impolite, and he had this fucking smirk on his face like he was happy to see us. As if by showing up resolved to put a bullet in his head if he looked at us funny we were doing him a favour.

And, you know, maybe we were. Above all else, Farley was a soldier. Even back in Costa Rica he liked to look his enemies in the eye. I don't think he enjoyed being a tool for conspiracy. Chaos Farley was a Berserker, a warp spasmed madman happiest in the midst of a brawl - and if there wasn't a brawl to be found he'd feel compelled to start one. When we came for him - I think he saw it as a challenge. He smelt blood in the water, and it didn't really matter if it it was ours or his own.

I thought about that stupid fucking grin a lot in the years after. Couldn't shake it for the longest time, and I didn't know why. But - I wouldn't have admitted it at the time, but now I think, Farley and me, we were a hell of a lot more alike than I would've wanted to admit. Soldiers roped into conspiracy. Officers, kingpins, berserkers. I wonder how many lives have I tossed away over the years? In the end, Chaos Farley died peacefully in his bed, surrounded by family. Since you're here, it remains to be seen what will become of me. You gotta ask yourself - d'you think you'd spot me grinning beneath this bandana?"

"It didn't really matter if one looked in Whitehall or Washington, the picture was the same. Kingmakers hiding in dimly lit rooms, moving their pieces over secure lines, sacrificing the occasional pawn or knight when they deemed it imperative - all for king and country, of course.

For a good while I bought it too. More fool me, right? In my defence, the excitement of the moment is a poor time to consider the framework of events. One is saving the world with minutes to spare, and when - if - one comes out of it alive there's medals, letters from the Queen, crumpets, the full Monty... Enough diversion until the next catastrophe, and then one dashes blithely off to do it all over again.

Like a dog, chasing a ball.

But the rush wears off a little faster every time, and come First Moscow I was rather over being thought expendable for the cause of western civilization. I climbed the ladders of Vauxhall Cross and sampled the finest of apologia, but frankly it did little to improve my feelings, or for that matter restore my faith in our cause.

John Baylor once said it was bullshit all the way down. Seemed to me it was the same all the way up.

It was Monte-Carlo of all places where I initially encountered the Stygian Key. At first I thought Old Blighty urgently needed a better brand of traitor to stack up. Then of course... I was cordially invited."

"Samantha Savage? Hooo boy. You know that saying about a riddle wrapped in an enigma? That's her, alright.

Savage ran Entente. When we almost blew up the world over Cuba back in the sixties, Kennedy and Kruschev created a... task group, you could say, to prevent it happening again. 'Entente' - it meant 'understanding', amongst diplomats. Independent, proactive, underground - there's a photo of Kruchev, Savage and Kennedy in Vienna, at the signing. A year later Kennedy is dead. And one year after that the Soviets remove Kruchev from power. Nobody believes Entente is a good idea anymore - but it's too late, it's out there already, protecting the world from its own madness.

The funny thing is, nobody seems clear on the reason Kruchev and Kennedy settled on Savage. I've seen classified files from the seventies - the CIA was convinced she was a Soviet plant. The KGB writes she must be a British agent, and the Chinese were certain she was French. Nobody has any of her credentials - no identification, no fingerprints, no file or photo's, no security clearance, not so much as a high school diploma. Not even the brass tacks of an identity, fake or real.
Nobody knows who Savage is.

Yet there she was, hand picked by the President and the Premier. Why? Why her? A woman, in the sixties? How did they even know her?

It gets stranger.

I first met Savage when she put together SIX in 2009. That's 46 years after Entente was created - but going by that old picture from Vienna she'd not aged a day. And the years after sure did put wrinkles on my face - but not hers. I commented on that, once, and was rebuffed - but at the end of Adumbra, after we'd gone through so much together, she handed me another photo. A ton of people were dead, there was an ocean of crap that I was about to swan dive right into, and I think she knew how far I was about to fall. The picture- it was old and yellowed, and on it a group of men in stovepipe hats and old-time U.S. Army uniforms stood in front of a destroyed church. I didn't immediately recognize any of them - except for Sam Savage, on the left, and the man in the middle, who was clearly Abraham Lincoln. Underneath it said 'Antietam, 1862'.

I still don't know what that means. But I knew it was a secret, which meant that one person in the world still trusted me."

"And so, for a few long years, we were back to this. Ancient analog planes flying through the long winter of the Crash, desperate to deter the reds that were somewhere beyond the edge of our part of that ball we call Earth. They did not speak to us, but we were terrified of what we had done to them. So we loaded our bombers with the arsenal of megadeath and waited for their rage to spill out over the horizon. Inevitably, we thought, because we cast ourselves in their place, and knew only what we would have done."

I've debated adding attribution. Might try it, it'd take away a bit of the ambiguity that I personally rather like, but it might also be a case of I think it's obvious when I'm writing from the perspective of an 'established' character, but I might well be the only one :-D

"The whole affair had a dozen codenames attached, but Savage referred to it as 'Adumbra' so that's what we ended up calling it. Why? 'Cause otherwise we'd have to call it 'the fucking apocalypse' and nobody wanted to be a negative nancy, okay?

I was there for the briefings. I saw first hand what Razaq did or tried to do in those labs he squirreled away in the jungles and on Antarctica. I heard all about the Vohl-Reis axioms, Sleeper Phrases, all that phase conjugate grammar or whatever shit the eggheads ended up calling it.

I never got it. And, like, I'm not an idiot. I can make sense of rifles and rockets and fuckin' congressional politics just fine. But I never understood how Razaq could put a bunch of stones together and the fuckin' rules of nature take a holiday. Far as I could tell he might as well have been waving a magic wand.

Anyway, Enoch Razaq's was trying to commune with his Architects or whatever his insane end goal was, and we had to stop him. So we did. It cost us a city, but we did stop him.

Then, as a final fuck-you-too, Razaq smears his cache of black magic hoodoo shit across the entire Internet. So there I am in the middle of what's left of Las Vegas with my metaphorical dick in my hand, watching Razaq cackle his last breath away, waiting for Joe Random Cyberpunk to decompile this shit and turn his laptop into an end-of-the-world reality bomb.

Well, of course Savage would have a backup plan. And of course she didn't tell me about it. As we were breaching Razaq's last defenses, her B-team busted through the doors of Saint Industries, cracked their mainframe like an egg and unleashed the datavores.

By the time Razaq actually croaked there wasn't an Internet left to upload anything into. And that's the story of how we saved the world by fucking it over harder than Kroner, harder than any enemy I ever stopped has ever managed. Funny how that goes.

Now guess who got to take the fall for it."

WELL this snippet explains a lot.
"This explanation posits that external observation leads to the collapse of the quantum wave function. This is another expression of reactionary idealism, and it's indeed the most brazen expression."
