With all the progressively crazier stuff that's taking this generation to make itself felt, it really feels like the CWS world is shifting quite smoothly into some sort of sci-fi horror setting.

It is a Bartini Beriev VVA-14 and it was apparently used in MGS 3, so, yeah :).

I wonder if Australia shouldn't be the premier supplier of uranium in the Western World. And there's a major issue with Filipino smugglers trafficking illegally mined uranium to Indonesia and beyond in ekranoplans, so that it can be sold to Japanese megacorps, Chinese operatives or WRAITH agents. Through subsidiary of the Exchange, possibly located in Singapore. Or Kuala Lumpur. At the top of the Petronas Towers!

Well, we do have a lot of uranium and we love selling dirt.

Incidentally there was a recent discovery of about $20 trillion worth of shale oil in South Australia. Might want to keep that in mind!

HMS Black Hood is the first of three new 'fast strike carriers' commissioned by the Royal Navy as a counter to the increasing proliferation of Soviet battlecruisers. Sleek and stealthy, with a much lower profile than is usual for carriers, they are faster and more difficult to detect than the Europa class carriers built by ConEurope. However, they also carry fewer aircraft. Strike carriers typically carry a mixture of Basilisk and Dragonfly fighters.

Black Hood was commissioned in 2000 and first saw action during the Third Gulf War; her sister ships Black Empire and Black Centaur were commissioned in respectively 2004 and 2008. Between 2015 and 2020 all ships of the class were refit with powerful coil gun artillery systems to augment their firepower. By the start of the 2020s the Royal Navy developed the strategy of pairing each strike carrier with at least one Blackfyre class SSCN to further strengthen the striking power of its fast action squadrons.

In 2014 Black Centaur was involved in a green-on-blue fire accident when one of its fighters launched a missile at the WEU stealth cruiser Vulcan off the coast of Angola. Vulcan and its escort were providing electronic warfare support for a WEU black operation; unaware of the cruiser's presence in the area a flight of fighters off Black Centaur ran into its jamming fields on a routine patrol, and subsequently misidentified Vulcan as the Soviet heavy missile cruiser Nikolaev which was known to be in the area. The flight commander concluded that he was being attacked and subsequently launched stand-off missiles at the WEU ship. Despite Vulcan's point defenses the cruiser sustained substantial damage, and retaliated with phased microwave arrays that fried the electronics of the fighters and outright blew one out of the attackers out of the sky before the British aircraft managed to disengage. Soon as it became clear what had transpired the engagement blew up into a major diplomatic incident, and the WEU had to temporarily cut short its support of South African forces in Angola.

NukeMap

Works with google maps to pick any location in the world and, choosing your own yield or from a set of presets (anywhere from a crude dirty bomb to Tsar Bomba) to see the blast radius and the like for a nuclear detonation. The site defaults to Manhattan just because the island can't get a break.

Interesting, it defaults me to Amsterdam. Which is apparently pretty much gone with one 100kt warhead. I did a project on the old nuclear shelters of our glorious capital two years back, and that's pretty sobering. Given what those shelters amounted to I think I might prefer to stay topside and just eat the blast wave, really.

Which leads me to a question that's been bothering me for a bit... We've established that 9/11 in CSW happened to the Soviets and that there was an attack in Moscow, and that they invaded Afghanistan over it, but did we ever establish just what happened that day?

Cranking the calculator up to 1 exaton and then working out how to position it so that only Australia and Papua New Guinea are untouched by the thermal radiation was kind of fun :v

And no, I don't think the Moscow attack has ever been elaborated on. I'll admit that my lack of knowledge regarding Moscow is showing here, but perhaps some kind of bombing in Red Square?

Huh, drop a megaton over the heart of Hong Kong and where I actually live would only be on the outer edges of the firestorm, possibly with lots of hills to act as further shielding. Makes up for lengthy commuting times, I guess.

I vaguely recall Arty mentioning Red Square and some kind of zeppelin being involved, but that's years ago and I can't for the life of me remember if we ever settled on any specifics. I imagine it was a major thing though, maybe even a fizzled nuke that destroys part of the Kremlin and blows up the square when there's a parade of some kind going on?

I remember it being agreed that WRAITH carried out the attacks, but how apparent was that at the time of the bombings? Not much, because the Soviets get going in the Middle East, if I remember correctly.

I imagine WRAITH used some Afghanistan-based proxies to carry out the attack for it, because that's more of Kroner's style. Maybe he picked a bunch of warlords who used to be bankrolled by Gosely's CIA before she fell out of favour? 'Cause that would cause international tensions to flare up nicely, which is exactly what Kroner wants.

That leaves the question of where he got a nuke from though. Maybe WRAITH tried building one itself? Which would explain why it fizzled...

I kinda want to break up Belgium, with Flanders becoming semi-independent and Wallonia joining France, and Brussels directly subordinated to the WEU. So the European state has its own actual city-state territory that it bases things like the Commission and ConEurope HQ and the European Security Initiative. Does that make sense?

May McQ, former Engineering Officer for the Royal Air Force and the Ministry of Space, serves as the SIS quartermaster from 2012 onward. Despite having to run her tech labs on a shoestring budget compared to its chief competitors in international intelligence she's proven to be very skilled (some would say scarily so) at dreaming up the sort of demented and often lethal gadgets that allow Her Majesty's operatives to escape from dicey situations with style and explosions. Real surname is McHugh, but for some reason no-one calls her that, and she's taken to signing official documents with the alternate.
