Soviet Augmetics

This article gives a brief overview of the augment ('cyborg' in Western terminology) models employed by the Soviet Union.

Combat Model I (1992 - 2012+)
Numbers In Existence: One ('Comrade Hammer', Col. Gennady Muranov)
Purpose: Cybernetic warfare experimentation; total ground warfare superiority; individualized strategic warfare
Technology: external titanium-molybdenum armor on a reinforced carbon nanotube frame; robotic limbs; fully computerized brain; gel-cased carbon steel spine; fiber-optic CNS; electro-active musculature; echolocation hardware; parabolic hearing; integral rocket boosters; taser system in the right forearm; Makarov-built automatic gun in the left; shoulder-mounted micro-RPG; chest-mounted solid state laser; powered by four micro-nuclear batteries; nuclear relaunch generator in case of emergency; SICKLE uplink; full ocular mechanics package
Employed By: 1st PSN VV "Vityaz", Osnaz MVD (special forces troops under the purview of the Ministry of the Interior)

There is only one Combat Model I in existence, that being the very first cyborg ever constructed by the Soviet Union: Gennady Muranov. 'Comrade Hammer' has been the recipient of progressively more cybernetic enhancements. Throughout the years he has always been the very pinnacle of USSR cybernetic achievement. As of 2012 CIA analysts believed Comrade Hammer to represent at least 5 billion dollars in terms of technological development.

Combat Model II (1998 - 2012+)
Numbers In Existence: Several dozen
Purpose: Black ops overmatch
Technology: Reinforced skeletal frame; reinforced musculature; boosted immune system; nano-cybernetically enhanced erythrocyte healing; solid-state sub-memory core for deadline backup
Employed By:
  • 68th Recon/Spetsnaz Regiment, VDV, RKKA (Airborne Troops)
  • 16th Spetsnaz Brigade, attached to 2nd Guards "Tamanskaya" Motor Rifle Division
  • KGB Chief Directorate 18 Operations and Technology
The Combat Model II was the first attempt to weaponize on a large scale the first six years of experimentation with the Model I cyborg. Although far more modest in scope, the Model II still boasts significantly superhuman ability in the form of significantly enhanced reflexes and durability. Uniquely the Model II is equipped with a deadline backup system which enables the operator to survive extreme trauma events that would kill any ordinary human, such as being doused in liquid nitrogen. This backup system proved to be psychologically debilitating as well as ethically dubious, and was therefore discontinued on later models.

Combat Model III (2010+)
Numbers In Existence: Several hundred
Purpose: Standardized transhuman enhanced warfare
Technology: Reinforced skeletal frame; reinforced musculature; boosted immune system; nano-cybernetically enhanced erythrocyte healing; subdermal armor; partially computerized brain; GoldenEye ocular implant; wireless transceiver
Employed By:
  • 425th Separate Reconnaissance Battalion, 55th Naval Infantry Division
  • 22nd Guards ObrSpN, attached to 345th Independent Guards Orbital Rifle Regiment, VDV, RKKA
  • 29th Separate Brigade of Special purpose, Spetsnaz GRU
Incorporating lessons learned with the Model II, the Model III represents the next step in Soviet cybernetics. A 21st century approach to cybernetics, the Model III has similar superhuman reflexes, is practically impervious to small arms fire owing to a layer of subdermal armor, and has unsurpassed battlefield awareness thanks to the in-built wireless transceiver and the advanced ocular implant that allows the operator to peer into the near-IR and near-UV spectrum.

Infiltration Model A (2000-2005)
Numbers In Existence: Several dozen
Purpose: Infiltration special agent
Technology: data-jack; vocal synthesizer; mental overclock chipset; fiber-optic nerves; solid-state memory enhancement; nano-cybernetically enhanced erythrocyte healing
Employed By:
  • KGB Chief Directorate 18 Operations and Technology
  • Interlinked System for Recognizing Enemies [SOUD]
Conceived as the ultimate Soviet spy, the Infiltration Model A is an espionage cyborg geared exclusively toward the infiltration of enemy bases and computer systems. Unfortunately the need to appear passingly human even under x-ray scanning ruled out the possibility of advanced skeletal restructuring, something that was revised with the A-MF model.

Infiltration Model A-MF (2005 - 2012+)
Numbers In Existence: Several dozen
Purpose: Improved infiltration special agent
Technology: data-jack; vocal synthesizer; mental overclock chipset; fiber-optic nerves; solid-state memory enhancement; fully computerized brain; vocal synthesizer; skeletal enhancement; art-muscle; nano-cybernetically enhanced erythrocyte healing; active subdermal chameleon camouflage; wireless transceiver
Employed By:
  • KGB Chief Directorate 18 Operations and Technology
  • Presidential Security Service
An improved version of the Infiltration Model A, the A-MF goes several steps further and thus represents an incremental increase in Soviet cybernetic enhancement capabilities. This espionage model has most of the advantages of the later combat models, as well as the added capability offered by active subdermal camouflage and the addition of an in-built wireless modem. A model A-MF will look entirely human on the outside, but is still crawling with furtive and dangerous machinery, moreso than any other cyborg model.

Standard Model Theta (2012+)
Numbers In Existence: Handful
Purpose: Advanced transhuman 'new communist'
Technology: data-jack; wireless transceiver; group mind; nano-cybernetically enhanced erythrocyte healing; SICKLE uplink
Employed By: Ministry of the Interior

Introduced in late-2012, the Standard Model Theta is according to the Ministry of the Interior 'a concept for the soviet citizen of the second half of the 21st century'. It incorporates such radical new features as 'group mind' shared wireless networking capability and a SICKLE uplink for maximal world-wide connectivity. Many in the Ministry believe that the Theta model, once implemented on a wide scale, represents the ultimate ideal of the Soviet citizen.

This Theta like stuff sounds like the next step of the USSR is to turn themselves into the borg. Oh and this articles seems to reference STB extensively :D Why is Comrade Hammer the only cyborg with inbuilt weapons?

I guess that's up for interpretation :). Mobius consulted me on what cyborgs were available, and in turn I incorporated bits and pieces of his work into this article. Let's just call it "synergy" ;).

Couple of reasons: the first is that it's just excruciatingly expensive to build someone like Hammer (five billion dollars isn't peanuts!); second of course is that it'll be damned hard to find volunteers for a procedure that essentially means giving up everything that makes them human (as of '12 the only organic bits left in Hammer are a few bits of brain and nerves, most of it's been computerized); and finally the Soviets don't want to fall into what I'll call the 'doctor Manhattan trap' -- it's simply a really bad idea to give any single person so much super special powers that he becomes essentially unstoppable.

See, the contingency for Hammer flipping out and going nuts is basically 'drop a nuke on him'. This does not mean there might not be a few guys walking around with Makarov 1,000 RPM micro-pellet guns built into their wrists, but generally the Soviets try and avoid the situation where they'd need an entire division or more to take out a single individual...

Is it just me, or are you starting to develop a thing for the use of the word 'overmatch', Siege? ;)

Comrade Hammer! Individualized strategic warfare! Goddamn, new communist... transhumanism. Oh man.

Hey, I wonder what category of cyborg does NATASHA X fall under.

Natasha is an experimental evolved version of Model A-MF that hasn't yet entered serial production.

You know, back when he was first developed for CSW, I always got thei mpression that Hammer was quite slow. Certainly he gave the impression of being a big stompy robot guy. But optical nerves and a computerised brain ... the guy must be fast.

Also a chest mounted laser is so very Mazinger Z. :)

To be honest he probably was fairly slow back in his early days as a cyborg, when his brain and CNS were still mostly human. Ever since those were mostly replaced however it's been an other matter entirely. To quote his Solid Six entry:
Solid Six wrote:Despite his hulking look Hammer is capable of extremely fast movement that is at the same time extremely precise. His brain is mostly replaced by computers, granting him a perfect memory as well as vastly higher clock speeds than ordinary humans – Hammer can literally sidestep certain projectiles. He is perhaps the most fearsome opponent an enemy of the USSR can ever come to face.
Then of course there's the matter of Hammer being the most highly experienced cyborg soldier by virtue of being the first, so yeah, you don't want to mess with him.
