I've decided just now to go ahead and add another minor difference in their appearance compared to humans: the whites of their eyes won't be visible most the time.
Think about it for a bit: how many animals can you name that show whites of their eyes? Humans, obviously... but I can't think of any others. Cats, dogs, birds - all have the pupil then the majority of the rest of the visible part is the color.
I think I'll go with dogs as the reference guideline. Imagine a human face with a dog's eyes and you have about what I have in mind.
Just another little thing that humans will find bizarre.
