Best names in fiction

Post by Siege »

Dakarne and I were just discussing the best character names in fiction. He nominated "Angelique de Xavia" (Angel X), a police officer who is a recurring character in several Christopher Brookmyre novels. I countered this with The Man from U.N.C.L.E. whose main character is named "Napoleon Solo", which is probably as close as anyone in a mainstream American television series has ever come to the awesomely ridiculous names characters reguarly are bestowed with in Japanese cartoons.

This leaves me wondering... What do you guys think are the best names in fiction? And to make this more interesting and less of a plug-fest, let's not nominate our own characters. You can nominate characters from works on O1, as long as you aren't the one to come up with them!
"Nick Fury. Old-school cold warrior. The original black ops hardcase. Long before I stepped off a C-130 at Da Nang, Fury and his team had set fire to half of Asia." - Frank Castle

For, now De Ruyter's topsails
Off naked Chatham show,
We dare not meet him with our fleet -
And this the Dutchmen know!

Isaac dan Der Grimnebulin, from Perdido Street Station. This name encapsulates everything about the character, and it sounds awesome, too.

Jacuzzi Splot, from Baccano! That is all.
When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Heading said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

Edge Maverick, the protagonist of Star Ocean 4, is on the same level as Hiro Protagonist.
"This explanation posits that external observation leads to the collapse of the quantum wave function. This is another expression of reactionary idealism, and it's indeed the most brazen expression."

I second Hiro Protagonist. Lives up to his name, too.
"The universe's most essential beauty is its endlessness. There is room and resources enough for all of us. Whether there is room for all of our passions is the question, and the problem that we work tirelessly to find a solution to."
