God Steve, you keep writing 'em faster than I can read 'em :D

Seriously though, great work.

Re: Is Everyone Alrighto?

Forums sort of seem a fading thing, to be honest. None of the big forums I used to frequent seem to be doing well, visitors-wise. But I'm glad y'all decided to check in. Good to see you're hanging in there. And this place isn't going anywhere anytime soon ;)

Re: Is Everyone Alrighto?

Hey all, I'm doing ok. Worked mostly from home pre-crisis, still doing so, that wasn't a hurdle. Lockdowns, curfews and general everything-is-cancelled have a definite effect on general mental well-being though. Still, hard to complain when everyone's healthy and life is pretty much ticking on as pl...

Zooming in on Old Town, 'Summit City', the ancient metropolitan islands of San Dorado. This is what has so far been defined.

Oh yeah I can see how that can be confusing. I'll clarify that in the next version, along (hopefully) with main points of interests and a bunch of additional details.

Map of San Dorado, v3.0. This one incorporates several tweaks to the way the city is supposed to have historically evolved that were not previously reflected. https://i.ibb.co/rGTNZ26/San-Dorado-3-0.png (click to enlarge) Main revisions: Changed shape and size of main island (Shevirat) Removed secon...

 :D

Well, we all knew Moby was from the future already with his dystopic take on American politics, but that just double confirms it I guess.

Re: Shear Anarchy / San Dorado [Worldbuilding Exercise]

* I'm using 'men' here because 'great person' doesn't sound quite right, but San Dorado has a long and proud history of affording all genders and sexes equal opportunities to be stabbed in the back. 'Great Sole' fits the bill and sounds pretty neat as a non-gendered alternative to 'great men'. It a...

Re: Shear Anarchy / San Dorado [Worldbuilding Exercise]

The Old Estates The Old Estates are the ancient, uniquely privileged aristocratic families of San Dorado. Their origin lies in old Writs of Tithe and Sequester issued from the 10th century onward: compulsions of arms and tribute placed on local great men, compensated in return with immutable freedo...

Re: Shear Anarchy / San Dorado [Worldbuilding Exercise]

I can't imagine a legal system like that without a bunch of arcane grandfathered exceptions though, especially for an IIRC reformed post-feudal state like San Dorado. There could just be a law that a particular list of ancient estates count as people for the purposes of being shareholder-electors, ...

Re: Shear Anarchy / San Dorado [Worldbuilding Exercise]

As previously established the Community of the Companies of San Dorado is essentially the joint-stock legislature of the city of San Dorado. There are three requirements for buying stock in the Community: one has to be of age, a resident of San Dorado City and a natural person. My current thinking i...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

Appreciate the implied Pyropraxic rep :P Thanks! The nod is deliberate, though as writing developed sceiren smithing turned into kind of the opposite of what the Pyropraxy is doing. They're not burning anything so much as pulling weird matter that shouldn't exist out of fire that isn't real. Fragme...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

Nice. What is a starmoth?! Sentient butterfly-like starships woven from invalid matter. Manned, I would imagine, by only handfuls of sceiren. The ship knits its personality from the disposition of its skein. Propelled by vast hypersails that leave ghostly auroras in their realspace wake. Starmoths ...

Sceiren Singular: sciren. Lean bipedal omnivores with large pointed ears, a sharp nose, long digitigrade legs, semi-permeable skin covered in reddish fur and narrow waists with slim midsections. Tallest at their withers, sceiren heads dip forward below their shoulder blades. Extending back from the...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

Yes! That's exactly it, the thing needed to make his profile weird and different and more than simply 'ancient upload dude'. So. This can (and will) still be expanded upon, but I feel it finally does justice to what he is: Sidney Hank ”They said the power I desired no man could wield. So I ceased to...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

Was Hank one of the first humans to step foot in the K-Zone? Did he have to be human for this timeline to work out? Perhaps this refugee fleet was following or helped by a giant space kraken, that happened to be one of his Earthreign-era insurance policies. At the time his entity would've been very...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

Thanks for the compliments! I haven't written anything like this for a while. It's very enjoyable trying to tie remote bits of the universe together. I agree that definitely exists, even if sometimes I'm tempted to play up the post-capitalist gig economy aspect of the USS where the average foreign a...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

But in the end, what's the difference between someone who comes into office with a headful of good ideas and a realistic picture of the situation, and someone who merely thinks they do? As ever what constitutes a good idea is in the eye of the beholder. There may well be tranquil bucolic settlement...

CEID, CHARGE, the Rangers, Olympic, all the trappings of the Solarian state serve the President maybe not unquestioningly but certainly loyally. Returning to this for a hot minute, it's probably more correct to say that CEID, CHARGE, the Rangers, Olympic and the President loyally serve a shared ide...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

In this system it still seems like there's something resembling libertarian private law, though more in the "gangs and medieval guilds" sense than the "individual consumer jurisdiction-shopping" sense - I assume someone who belongs to a primary organization will have their crime...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

As we know Cevaucia is a vast collection of crime cartels, pirate lords, megacorps, rogue black ops units, alien warlords, secretive intelligence outfits and ultramilitant despots that have somehow warred themselves into a semi-stable configuration. I know it's perhaps not the most exciting topic to...
