Re: [Story] Short Stories

It's cool to see the fallout of the Russian civil war, though admittedly the short format here only really serves as an introduction into what is a wider and more interesting thematic conflict. That said, I can't fault anyone giving GROM a little screen time.

Just part of the opener which I have managed to write recently. She stood with the warm white sand between her toes and watched the waves break into the beach. Wind caressed the back of her messy, white-blond head and tanned shoulders as emerald water curled high, spray like mist boiling off the cur...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

Conversely, and also-interestingly, what if the Zigonians changed their ways after the shame and trauma of an interstellar war wherein they destroyed a homeworld... but it was someone else's homeworld, a people who they nearly wiped out? I like that as an idea, but as with my earlier suggestion it'...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

To counterbalance how chill they are, it might be worth expanding a little on the suggestibility stuff which you mentioned. One wonders if first contact wasn't really a whole bunch of USS assholes sort of fleecing Zigonian society and implanting this idea that it would be best if the carnivals of Zi...

Re: Xenosurf

The AO Amita is Killi's creation, but the Amita Project is very much a part of Semyaza's scenario. When her staff ask questions like 'how is this going to save the Oecumene and prevent the Ajata destroying the Great Surf', Achilles says 'you don't need to know', but at the same time she is asking th...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

Incidentally USS electrodemocracy and Zigonian festivals would both revolve around consensus building in their own way, so there's something of a mirror there. In any case, I like the premise. In writing Mobile Suit Sol Gundam I used something similar: the Cydonian Republic operated on a system call...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

You could image that the Zigonians, with their psychology better tuned for living in harmony, man, have probably explored methods of government outside of what is normal here on earth. Collectivist direct decision making or whatever. They might have a highly developed body of political and social sc...

Re: Random ideas (again)

Not necessarily. You could be using hydraulics or power screws or electroactive silicon, but when people say 'working powered armour' I typically think 'oh carbon nanotubes'.

Re: Random ideas (again)

It really depends on the technology involved. Like if you have a reasonably well developed base of nanotechnology (ie. what you'd need for artificial muscles, workable batteries etc), then you can probably use that to catastrophically mess up mission critical storage devices.

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

One imagines that CJ Monotow's Star Wars might have taken some influence form Zigonian film making, in the manner in which he tried to blend the whole narrative into the psychedelic visual and aural experience. As I recall those films were extremely controversial in a very 'audiences weren't ready' ...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

At first this didn't really appeal to me, but now that I think about it, I kind of like it. I mean what's core is Baylor and Selphie's personalities (and also the aloha shirt/yellow sun dress +cowboy boots), and if being artificial people feeds into those personalities, it works for me.

Re: Random ideas (again)

3 is just painting a target on your power armor troops. That's not really all that different from a situation with a mixed force like in scenario 2. In the end if your officer is a harder target which takes more effort to take down and so draws fire from the grunts that's not necessarily a bad thin...

Re: Sovereigns of the Stars Supreme, revisited

Byzon was always an element of the universe I liked. I mean obviously he was Stalin, but I think that obvious parallel really worked because it gave the Bragulans a character beyond just being angry bears. There was this reflection of the USSR in the 60s: a monolithic regime at odds with its enemies...
