[Polity]The American Space Planets

Post by Heretic »

Ok, aside from scientific blunders, I'm also treading on what is and isn't ok for polities, socially and such, as I might be ruining the mood and theme of Solidarity Wars. So if you don't like it, please don't yell automatically, I'm just doing what is possible along guidelines.

Freedom is inevitable, and if you don't like it, then you're a commie!- A War Officer's typical shout.

History
During the early days of human exploration, a colony ship filled with historical reenactors, moral traditionalists, and a couple of whacked scientists colonized an Earthlike planet which they called Utopia. There, after terraformiing it a bit, they started a suburban/town colony, where many lived in tract housing surrounding cul-de-sacs, enjoying a peaceful and changeless society. As Utopia grew and cities started developed, the Utopians colonized two other similar planets in their solar system, keeping the suburb lifestyle possible. Gradually, a real government was formed and was molded into a United State style Representative-Legislative-Executive branch style federal democracy. Course, there were some alterations. Now, the Utopians, after colonizing more and more, renamed themselves the American Space Planets, and embarked on a crusade against xeno-commies and all those who oppose the American Way.

Society and culture

Unlike the 50s, there is more flexibility in terms of race, but not politics. Socialism, Communism, and un-American is frowned upon. The two leading political parties, the Anti-Xeno Party and the Interventionist Party, disagree upon how to deal with aliens and outside influences, whether to eliminate and degrade aliens, or use freedom loving aliens to fight against communist loving aliens, respectively. The family structure is mostly nuclear, as is expected of everyone, and it is not uncommon to see common routines of fathers in business suits go to work at the same time, mothers gossiping while smiling eerily, boys going outdoor, girls playing dolls, and all the many elements of a typical white American suburb. Course, this is different in cities and rural places, but the mindset is the same:

1. America is not just a country, but a belief and living philosophy. Thus, it is possible for the USA to not be American, and the ASP, which has no connections to it, to be American.

2, Social order and values must be upheld. The American Dream, Bill of Rights (translated in their terms), and Free Enterprise must be upheld at ALL cost.

3. Ungodly, Freedom-hating Commies, Socialists, and American Haters, human, alien, or otherwise, must be fought in all fronts.

4. War bonds are a tradition, so that the GIs out in space can fight the good fight!

Music has a 50s-60s feel to it. A rock and roll style is predominant, though other types of music are imported, like metal and such, though that is frowned upon by the dominant moral guardians. Sunday is a time when all are required to go to religious institutions, and emergency institutions have radios and televisions on religious channels so that law can still be enacted while there is no risk of danger.

Parents are expected to regulate video games to less than 3 hours a day, and video game addiction is considered far worse than tobacco and alcoholism. Outdoor activities, such as baseball, boy/girl scouts, and other sports and games are encouraged. The most popular aside from football is lasertag, a game where a toy gun is used to shoot beams of light at the general body area, where a chestplate is used to signal a hit. Children who later join the army learn basic military tactics from this game, and is part of the physical education program. Juvenile delinquents are common, though not as immature and dirty as their more "secular" counterparts. Family time is important, and picnics, movies, and sport games are very popular Saturday activities. All in all, a 50s society is maintained here with hints of modern technology.

Government
There are 50 systems under the ASP, though colonies and territories are many. Each system is run by a governor, and each system has 50 senators and representatives, in order to make it even. A president rules the executive branch, and vetoes bills that he dislikes. The Judicial branch is run by veteran police officers and sheriffs. There were some cases where people alleged for communism were lynched. The military is semi-independent, and is directly controlled by the Executive branch, though there are martial units that are related to the two other branches.

They are not in any galactic group, considering such thing similar to the 'evil UN' of past. They are at bad terms with C-Web, and good terms with OAS, though. The other factions are on and off. Though the social life of an average ASP citizen is ethical and happy, the government overall has its closets packed with skeletons and conspiracies. Whole departments are dedicated to making schemes upon schemes against enemy and potential threats, and many times have the already minimal code of war been broken with experimental secret weapons. Small proxy wars are fought with questionable polities and alien race, whose only common similarity with the American Space Planets is a mutual hate for certain governments different from theirs.

There are two dominant parties in the ASP. One is a big company racist isolationist, and the other is a super-patriotic gun-ho militarists :

Anti-Xeno: The Anti-Xeno party was founded upon the idea that all aliens are not human, and thus, are very critical of the ASP's action, thus being enemies. They focus on anti-immigration of literal aliens, more benefits for corporations that will help the war effort, private armies for said corporations, and human-centered policies (or at least, upper class benefits). Other agendas include a bit more bigger government, anti-gay laws, and stricter moral codes. They also believe that if aliens shouldn't be exterminated, then they should be "assimilated" to American culture, or in layman terms, work as slaves for companies and private buyers. They tend to side with any faction fitting their purpose, though they must be human.

Interventionist: Americans need to be a beacon of hope and Americanism, not genocidal corporationists who want to become isolationists. The Interventionist Party advocates more military funding, programs to slowly bring captured alien races to the American Way, and gun rights. They are less concerned about homosexuality, focusing more on keeping the traditional family together, and believes that big corporations with political powers (major lobbying, bribes, etc.) is similar to socialism. Flag burning in front of these guys' faces are a big no-no, unless you want a hole in your face. Concerning aliens, they are more than happy to align with various "freedom-loving" aliens and polities to fight C-Web sympathizers, though they believe OAS is very Un-American as well.

Both parties will toss away disagreements and differences when a threat appears.

Military
The main focus of the Patriotic Army is morale and attrition warfare. War in this century is a very grim prospect, and the citizen of the ASP must not be disgruntled! Once a space battle is won by unmanned starfighters and heavily loaded battleships, dropships of marines and special forces are sent into the atmosphere at specific locations, who then proceed to take a location for troop carriers to come in with infantry and armored vehicles. Among the first to drop are specialized commando/cheerleaders called War Officers, who go guns-ablazing against all odds, wearing layers of different materials, using an quick targeting eyepiece which allows muscles to instantly twitch toward the location of an enemy. They usually have awesome clothes and impractical weapons to impress the folks back home, and boosting the morale of all grunts following beside them. These men give commissions to low NCOs if necessary, and have full authority to direct war plans. There are rumors of the War Officers being genetically engineered, though they disagree, saying that the American Spirit is with them.

An average GI has a small emergency pack on their back containing survival gear, first aid, rations, and ammunition and maintenance. Their belt contains sidearm, ammunition, and a few incendiary grenades. Their helmet resembles the M1 helmet of the 1940s-early 80s, though there is metal flaps where the ears are, which includes a radio and mic. Smooth, hardened, insulated ceramic armor plates are used for the torso and parts of the arms and legs. These can resist heat attacks, some small arms fire, and electrical shocks, but other than that, not much. The ASP's standard weapon is the AS87 (American Spirit 1787) is a standard configuration rifle similar to the M14 rifle, albeit of insulated synthetic material, a shorter stock, different firing mechanism. and a larger standard clip. Despite this archaic design, it is a general-purpose weapon. It is easy and fast to turn the humble M14 wannabe into a lethal squad-based machine gun, a sniper rifle, and in some variants, even a flamethrower. The default gun is impressive, too. It fires a variety of bullets, has fully automatic, and is nearly as sturdy as the AK47. Heck, the AS87 might be the only weapon needed for the normal grunt, though they do also have an impressive array of rocket launchers, machine guns, and SMGs.

Tanks are logistically less used than Armored Fighting Vehicles, which are less gas-guzzling, faster, equipped with more counter-measure gear..hell, maybe even more armored than tanks. Still, the tank is still an icon of the army, and so, when odds are good enough these tread-rolling behemoths will come rolling for the propaganda cameras, firing a few shots at routed enemy locations, before quickly moving back for the main forces to do their real job, though sometimes tanks do have a role to play tactically, as one battle when all AFVs were disabled, a single tank with its built in treads gun downed half a war walker regiment before it was disabled, and even then it destroyed the rest as reinforcements came.

Aircrafts are used alot in ASP operations. All jets are Vertical-Take Offs, and helicopters can speed like a plane using it's aircraft-like wings. If orbital strikes are too risky or jammed, manual bombing from high-atmosphere jets are used. Helicopters drop troops and supplies off, and strafing targets is a very fun pastime for American Space Pilots.

I really like how arrogant the article presents the ASP; They really do convey that '50's era 'America is the best nation EVER' attitude pretty well. However, I suggest that you work on the name a bit. American Space Planets doesn't really sound like a real name for an interstellar government.

Well, I can't really think of any other name (as a joke, I might put Enclave, but eh.). The tone isn't necessarily anti-ASP, but I just wanted a little fun. What would be interesting is the interaction between this polity and others, especially the similar American style Starkland. Man, now I really wish for an RP.
