TSW Soundtrack

Post by Malchus »

If I recall correctly, the old TSW had this too.

Anyway, I was just listening to some awesome musical scores on youtube and I thought Requiem for a Dream would make for simply awesome background music for a big fight between space fleets.

It is a decent piece but highly over used in music video for just about any series you care to mention on youtube.

I used to really like that particular piece, but its been so overused by now that it has become a dramatic cliche that's annoying the hell out of me.

I've pretty much settled on Aces High as the anthem for the United Systems Alliance. It's so nice and... pompous.

Likewise I feel the Dambusters Theme would be fitting for the Federation of Concord, but of course it's entirely possible that Artemis will be along soon to demonstrate how hilariously wrong I am on that particular subject ;).

Some one needs to use the oBSG Theme/Colonial Anthem

Its pretty much the awesomest and cheeriest theme there is.

Edit: Added in a link to the OBSG theme. The two songs are very similar but the latter is the slightly less awesome Bear McCreary re-arrangment.

Psh, I wuv Lux Aeterna (please people, RfaD is the movie the piece is from, it had since been co-opted by everybody since Two Towers onward).

If we're talking orchestral themes, I'm like to stick with the final minute of the the Metal Gear Solid 2 theme (the marchy-sounding part) for sheer upliftingness.

But to dig out my list of good epic music:
Agnus Dei, Unsung War, and Zero from the Ace Combat series are the gold standards in video game music.

Neodammerung and Navras from Matrix Revolutions stand pretty forgotten next to John Williams's Star Wars stuff (please, do I honestly need to mention Duel of the Fates and Battle of the Heroes?).

Merchant of Death from IronMANG and Fever Dream from 300 both feature nice electric guitar work.

Assuming everyone knows the Final Fantasy VII One Winged Angel track (and the subsequent Advent Children remix with face-melting guitar solos), I'll point out the oft-overlooked song from the opening of the next installment in the series (VIII), Liberi Fatali.

Never forgetting this is SPACE FICTION, ( :) ), one can not help but mention the Crimson Tide theme, Roll tide, as well as the oddly named Little Ducks (good luck finding a link on Youtube) for SPACE SAILING. Screw you all, I still like my steath in space submarine metaphors.

Being the Phil Collins fanboy I am, I'll repeat two mentions from the oooold TSW thread: Land of Confusion (either this or the Disturbed version, take your pick) and In the Air Tonight (this or the Nonpoint cover, which is win). The latter song of the two probably works better, considering the verse is on the cusp of war, but not really in the full swing of things.

Speaking of fanboyishness, I'll drop the obligatory mentions for All Along the Watchtower (since you all know the Hendrix and Dylan - and U2/Dave Matthews Band - versions, behold, the nBSG epic win edition of the song: the Bear McCreary edition) and the comedy option: Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria.

I'm sure I can come up with serious singing songs later. :)

I don't really listen to all those fan-made videos in youtube that much, so Requiem for a Dream hasn't been ruined through over-exposure for me.

Siege, thank you. It's been years since I saw Battle of Britain (they once showed it in the local Cinemax channel years back), and those scores were an awesome reminder. And, damn, Moby. That's quite a selection. Merchant of Death I can see as the BG music for a montage of scenes leading up to a space battle (hidden gun turrets coming out of ships' hulls, fighters flying out of the hangar, etc.). Neodammerung would of course be for epic "final battles"...

EDIT: Oh, and one I just remembered just now: Karma, by Kamelot. At least the initial part, before the lyrics.

Well, going off the IronMANG soundtrack, I think Driving With the Top Down would fit even better for a battle-prep, early stages song.

Love of War, from the Howl's Moving Castle soundtrack, really fits well with what I've got in mind for the Dreynar Kingdom.

I couldn't find a decent Youtube version for this song, but if you go here and play "Temptation," that's the one. It takes it a second to kick in, but once the background chorus kicks in, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Siege - I'll see your Ace, and raise you a Trooper!

Call me a snob, but I've never been that interested in having my epic battles puncuated with the sounds of electric guitars and their ilk. At least when it comes to science fiction and fantasy, I tend to favor a much more traditional, symphonic score (never, ever, under any circumstances, will a tolerate the inclusion of one of my most hated instruments, the synthesizer).

That being said, I can think of a number of scores that fit perfectly with the whole epic warfare that is threatning to consume TSW.

First off, there's one of my favorite pieces from The Lord of Rings: The Two Towers (which I own the soundtrack to along with the rest of the trilogy), Isengard Unleashed. The real charm of this piece doesn't kick in until the Ents appear, which is met by a highly moving chorus. Once they make their march on Isengard, then the music really kicks in and provides a sense that there is a dramatic change of events going on.

On that similar vein, my next choice from LotR would be The Fields of the Pelennor, which would fit well with some sort heroic last stand.

And then there is Gladiator, whose score by Hans Zimmer is one of my favorites. In particular is the score for The Battle (ignore the subtitles), which is just good battle music in general.

If I wanted to get really old school on you guys, then I could whip out some of the score for Alexander Nevsky. If anyone wants to know where I got the phrase Peregrinus Expectavi Pedes Meos In Cymbalis that appears on my MSN messenger, then this is where its from.

Personally I'm of the opinion that there is only one piece of music suitable for a planetary landing situation.

Honestly, imagine the fear in the hearts of the enemy as the Space Marines land and blast a certain song across the battlefield letting the enemy know exactly how extremely fucked they are.

Of course, sometimes a desperate defence deserves it's own theme song.

And while there's of course no stealth in space, ships will be hunting each other, presumably to an appropriate tune.

Ultimately, however, there is only one piece of music that works well with any and every battle.
