An earthling's tour of the setting (EM)

Post by Destructionator »

Intro: the Expanded Multiverse I mentioned in the overview thread gives me some excuses to explore some directions the primary canon might leave behind, while at the same time, being made into the same universe's foundation, so several things remain the same.

This takes place in the EM for the out of universe reason that it originated as one of my myriad daydreams involving a cross over with people from the real world. But the reason that I'm writing it here is just to show off certain things and give lots of exposition. The characters from real world Earth in here are from there just so it is all new to them, giving the other characters an excuse to blabber on as they look in awe at what all mankind has accomplished.

(A quick note, the universe jump points can also jump through time. This allows real life earth people from the modern day to jump to the (an) ASE universe and see a future Earth. I'm actually starting to get a fair amount of working framework set up for all this in my head; it is all consistent with itself anyway in the least.)

This will be written as a short story of sorts over several short posts, packed with things you'll very likely find boring - lots of walking scenes* and plenty of clunky exposition. Just what I love! I'll bold and/or italicsify (that's a word now, I command it!) some headers to make skipping around easier in case you grow tired of something.

* Would you be surprised if I told you that some of my favourite movie scenes of all time are from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Every second where the Blue Danube waltz is playing is cinema gold as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway I'll probably write up the first section later tonight.

Departing Earth

"I suppose I should introduce you to everything," Adam, now known to his guests to be an A'millian, said. "My wife Leila," he pointed to a very tall and perfectly dressed female, "This is Doctor Wilinski," he pointed at a man who had all brown eyes and hair with long ears sticking back out of it, "he's also from my planet. And this is Lady Marie," he then pointed at a red haired female who appeared human.

"And what planet are you from?" one of the Earth visitors asked.

"I'm not from a planet," Marie answered, "I was born and raised in an independent space habitat. But, if I must be associated with a planet, it would be Koreallia."

"Which the locals also call Earth," Adam added, "Confusing isn't it? The discovery of the multiverse really threw a wrench in old naming schemes."

"And who are you all?" Marie addressed the other humans.

"I'm Christopher."

"I'm Alexandra, but you can call my Ally."

"Wesley."

"And I'm Mary."

Marie simply nodded at each as they introduced themselves, then gestured for Adam to join her privately. "Why exactly are you bringing them along again?"

"Two of them have medical conditions that are trivially cured back home, and since I've come to like them, I'm giving them a chance to finally be free of those conditions. The other two are their escorts; they understandably fear travelling alone with a bunch of aliens."

"That's it? You realize there are billions on that planet who could be trivially cured of their ailments back home?"

"Of course I do, but we can't help them all without violating the non-interference order."

"And bringing them along isn't interference?"

"No - even if they take pictures back and their bodies are checked for freefall symptoms, their claims will remain extraordinary and the evidence weak. It won't change history."

Marie nodded in agreement and they went back to their guests.

"All right," Adam said, "Double check to make sure you have everything; once we leave, there'll be no turning back."

God waves his hand, and they are on their way to orbit in a fully loaded A'millian shuttle, which took off discreetly enough to not be spotted. Also thanks to the work of God, the ship that has been parked in orbit was never spotted by Earth observers. (OOC: Works of God introduce fewer consequences than transporters and cloaking devices which are really the only way I can think of pulling this off. Even a hidden rocket in the Antarctic blasting off would probably be seen, and would need to be pretty big to get to a ship hidden where it might not be seen (Earth-Moon L2 point might work for that, since I don't think any probes have looked back there for a while.) Still, that probably wouldn't work, so it is God or transporters. God is easier.)

They carefully dock the shuttle to a waiting starship and the people move into the latter.

"I don't feel well," Christopher was the first to speak after getting into space.

"Don't move around much for a while," Adam suggested, "It takes a while to get used to space. I'll brb."

He then kicked off back toward the shuttle.

"Do you guys need help unloading your cargo?" Wesley offered.

"Nope," Adam answered, "we're bringing the shuttle with us, so most of it can just stay in there. We'll be able to handle the rest on our own. Besides, you probably wouldn't do much good up here anyway until you get used to moving around."

"What is all that stuff anyway?" Ally asked him when he came back out.

"Culture," he said, "and consumables of course, but you see, the multiverse gives us more than just the opportunity to see how things might have been. It also gives us a chance to see how things used to be: this universe is several hundred years prior in its relative history than mine. Mine is quite a bit before Marie's. The multiverse has given us a unique opportunity to see the past, and we're trying to make the most of it."

"But, if this is your past, shouldn't you already know all this? You still have books and stuff, right?"

"Some, but not nearly as much as we'd like. What happened was in the other universes, a huge amount of knowledge was lost in the twenty-first and twenty-second centuries. Of course some stuff survived, but a lot didn't."

"How?"

"Well, its going to be a long trip; I'll explain on the way. First, let us show you how to move around in freefall...."
