Official Movie Review Thread

Post by Shroom Man 777 »

I just came back from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and mang, it was totally great! Excellent old-fashioned nostalgic '50s stuff! Swash-buckling adventure! Old-school cinematography! An absence of flashy modern day crap! SOVIET RUSSIANS!

Tenacious female antagonist!

Geriatric protagonists!

Unknown horrors!

Forbidden knowledge!

Crystal Skulls!

OVERLORDS OF THE UFO!

NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS!

maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang!

NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS!
Wait, seriously?

Me and a large bunch of friends went to go see Speed Racer last week. Holy...wow. It was very bright, and very fast, but in a weird way it didn't feel like an adrenaline overdrive like a Michael Bay movie. There were some seriously good character moments, particularly with Speed and Pops. Now, that said, this is an action movie, and the action is very well done. The various tricks the cars pulled off were quite awesome, my favorite being the jump jacks. Racer X is cool and badass. And the villain is quite villainous.

They could have done without the kid and the chimp, in my opinion, but it didn't ruin the movie for me.

Yes. I am serious.

And no. Speed Racer NEEDED the kid. I forgot the kid's name. But it also needed the chimp. CHIM-CHIM!!!!

It would've been disloyal to the series! The purist in me cannot abide that!!!

Yeah, I mean I wasn't even all that annoyed by their antics. They just didn't really have much to do with the plot other than provide an in for the kiddies. Which, OK, I can see that, since it was intended for family audiences.

In the era of John Rambo, I did the unthinkable and watched Commando. Where John Rambo rips men's throats with his fingers, John Matrix wiggles his knife around. Still, it was funny.

I just came back from watching Indiana Jones, and I have to say it was pretty good. While it can't beat out Raiders of the Lost Ark (what could, anyways?), it is still a good addition to the saga. If I had to nitpick about something, then it would be the alien connection, which felt... off for some reason. It wasn't that big of a deal, really, and everything else about the movie made up for that. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5.

Just to be contrary, I wasn't that impressed with The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I think the series has jumped the shark a bit on this one so to speak. I mean, Aliens? Were they good guys? Bad guys? It's hard to say. They taught a bunch of Mesoamericans how to farm, but they also incinerated a Russian lady. The ending seemed kind of rushed.

The production also had some elements of "cheap". I didn't like how many of the props were CG, such as most of the stuff in the warehouse scene. It seemed a bit too obvious to me. The Ark of the Covenant cameo was nice though ;)

I found the nuclear blast bit kind of ridiculous, but I was willing to suspend disbelief on that considering how awesomely cool it was. A friend of mine inquired after Indy climbs out of the refrigerator, "Wouldn't he get leukemia or something, climbing out two seconds after the bomb just went off?". Anybody care to answer that? I'm not well versed enough in the subject to say.

Of course, in most of the action scenes, you'll be looking at Indy's back, as Harrison Ford is too old to be doing these sorts of scenes anymore. That was unfortunate, especially considering how well Stallone was able to reprise his own iconic role a few months ago.

To summarize, it was a good movie, but it was certainly the weakest out of the Indiana Jones films.

Just seen Sunshine today. It meets my expectations, a very tense sci-fi thriller. The ending was quite good and not overdone. All in all, a very good movie.

Okay, while I was up in Launceston for the week, I went to go see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was awesome. It exceeded my expectations significantly, and I'm happy to say that I think it was the best of the series.

I had no issue with aliens at all, cause if you're dealing with Godly artefacts, I see no reason to shun the concept of aliens. I also enjoyed the Ark's cameo. The only thing that I didn't really like was that Mutt ended up

FUCK OFF SPOILERS

Being Jones' son.

END FUCK OFF SPOILERS

It was so cliche and bleck. That's my only issue with the movie, and it's a minor gripe at that.

And yeah, the nuclear explosion scene was sweet.

Speaking of aliens, last night I saw Contact on TV. I thought the first act was a bit too heavy-handed in its soapboxing for SETI (do they really have that much problems securing funding in real life?), the second act where they decode the alien message was awesome... and I'm still not sure what the hell to think about the third act where it gets all mind-screwy. Apparently that last thing was the major change from the novel (which I once borrowed from the library but never read), something that doesn't surprise me. The romance between Jodie Foster's character and that hippie preacher dude could also have been done without.

I recently saw THE RUNNING MAN and mang, I must say that 80s dystopic future movies are goddamn prophetic.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

Just watched Iron Man. As far as movies go, it's average. As far as superhero movies go, it's gotta be one of the top of the crop.

I enjoyed RDJr as Stark, he portrays him perfectly. And yes, that's exactly how I imagine Tony Saint too, even down to his look. Anyway... music was solid, and I liked the whole concept, the very first bit showcasing Stark's life was champion. I liked the reference to Rhodes' future as well, but I am curious at the ending. It seems almost as if we've jumped straight to Civil War Stark, and I'll be interested to see how it plays out in the next film.

Jumper was awesome. I think it was Ford who at some point said that he came out of that movie with a real disappointment that he couldn't jump himself - I concur wholehartedly with that sentiment. As far as building a whole film around a single premise (dude finds out he can teleport) go, this has got to be pretty much perfectly executed. I was highly entertained for its whole run.

Yeah, Jumper was fun. But part of me kept expecting Samuel L. Jackson's character to go "This is for cutting of my arm in Episode III!" while attacking Hayden's character at some point. :D

National Treasure 2. Not as good as the second movie, but finally Hollywood is nice to Gulf War Marines! Mitch was either an Anti-Hero or Anti-villain, as he just wanted to be known and not for the treasure. Also, I think the president is Republican, as no one would want to place conspiracies on Democrats (except hardcore libertopians)

Still, I cried a little when Riley's Ferarri, finally getting away from the evil Socialist (lol) IRS, backed into another car.

Not as good as the second movie? :P

I did enjoy the fact that the movie touched upon stuff like the French and the English relations back in America's early days.

It's really amazing how tyrants can become best friends, and how allies in the fight for freedom and independence can become "arrogant gay little surrender-munkeys" :D

It would be awesome if JOHN RAMBO returned to Afghanistan to slaughter all of those sand-niggers - men, women and children - he saved from the Goddamn Soviets in Rambo III.

I feel so horrible for saying that.
