Well, to get my mind off recent concerns, I decided to go ahead and revamp Karen Salinas and Kaylee Kaminskiy (real name Kaliya Ilyinichna Kaminskaya; Kaylee Kaminskiy is just her Westernized name in this iteration).

Not quite. I've been trying to simplify things (again) since I'm tired of having dozens of parallel ideas at once with no real progress. I've been constructing a single setting for most of my characters as I revamp my style, but nothing coherent will probably come out of it for some time.

I do have some ideas on how characters are related and how they interact though. Like, say, Karen and Kaylee being buddies, and Maricar being Karen's kinda-sorta half sister in this setting. And so on.

A now a pic of revised Kid Baylor and Tyler to show male body types in my new style.

I think more changes in appearance are evident in males than females in my new style, but I'm not sure why exactly.

Because female details are... mmmm?

The faces do display more... depth. Possibly because the nose is a reference point of facial depth, and that is one of the things you've touched on in your recent artsings?

I know I don't comment much on others art, but it's been a pleasure watching the talent here develop. Malchus and Zor's work I like especially. :)

An anatomical study of a Drell. While Drell do have two genders like humans do, it is basically visually impossible to tell the difference between a male Drell and a female Drell on a purely visual inspection. The reproductive organs are kept sheathed and are only visible when in use. This, combined with the fact that Drell have a mating season based more around smell and low intensity bouts of fighting has meant that the Drell don't have any sexual connotation with nudity. Nudity is traditionally a sign of poverty, low class laborers would historically work growing feed, herding animals, tending root crop bearing plants and mining and digging in the nude (save for bandoliers and baskets) while higher ranking figures would wear clothes. They also consider human sexuality to be EXTREMELY weird.

Before gunpowder weapons displaced them, the preferred close quarters weapon of many drell civilizations were heavy cutlass like swords. These are typically called by human historians with limited imaginations Drell cutlasses or Drell Daos. Heavy blades designed to hack through flesh, bone and armor, made all the more devastating by the strength in the arms of a Drell.

There are only so many potential vowel and consonant combinations that don't sound like crap or aren't unintentionally funny, I think. That's why I don't like having to make up names for alien species, or at least names derived from their own language.

More revamps. This time of Nicole Mackenville and Maximus Li. I drew them wearing two uniform concepts Ive been throwing around in my head. She's wearing an idea for some generic boarding school uniform, while he's wearing an idea for a PE uniform.

On another note, putting Max beside Nicole makes him seem relatively shorter since she's one of my taller female characters (on flat heels she's about as tall as Maricar on elevated heels). Before he was always beside the shorter Karen, making him seem a lot taller.

Well, not real secrets, really. Just a lot of practice, experimentation, and incorporation. My first years of high school I started with generic attempts at making anime-style drawings up until my last two years as an undergrad, where I went the other direction and started making minimalistic drawings. Then I started incorporating features and style elements--mostly from different western toons that I like--and kept on experimenting and refining my style. That's basically it.

Here's a pic of how my style's changed from my minimalist days up to around three style revamps ago IIRC:

The more detailed facial expressions are really much more evident. And I like how these pairs are often having similar expressions, like Karen and Kaylee being all ^___^ while Baylor and that guy being all okay, and Max and Nicole being all disinterested and such.

Actually, the whole similar expressions thing after Kaylee and Karen are mere coincidence. No thought really went into the expressions of Kid Baylor and Tyler, and I originally planned to draw a grinning Kenny beside Nicole, but I ended up drawing Max first since I realized there was no space left on the paper for FATTY NERD Kenny.

A map I did based on a little alternate history thought.

Copy-pasted from AH.com.

I decided to go ahead and do a map for a scenario like this.
Somes J wrote:I have a vague idea I find vaguely amusing for making a Roman-wank timeline where the Roman Empire never falls and maybe is bigger than OTL ... but then subverting it by having this butterfly away the European industrial revolution, so instead of being super-powerful the place eventually falls behind and gets dominated by foreigners, sort of like China OTL. Maybe make it an India-wank world with various Indian nations carving up the planet among themselves like Europeans did OTL.

Mostly I like the idea of writing a story set in such an Empire, at first it reads like a standard super-Rome scenario along the lines of Roma Eterna (Robert Silverberg), but as the narrative progresses and reveals more about the politics of the world it shows what's really going on. I'm thinking maybe of a narrative along the lines of The Last Emperor, about the life of the last Roman Emperor; it would start out with him being groomed to succeed the great, glorious, and powerful eternal empire of Rome ... and then as he actually gets into politics we realize along with him how different the reality is from that
It's pretty much running with the Rome = early twentieth century China analogy, complete with anvilicious Japanese Empire expy.

It was just a lark so sorry if it's not very good.

Image

Power Blocs

Indian states (various):
Dark grey = Indian colony
Light grey = Indian puppet state

Mediterranean Co-Prosperity Sphere:
Orange = Leutvian Empire: likes to talk about liberating the oppressed Mediterranean people from Indian domination, really just wants to carve out its own local colonial empire.
Yellow = Anatolia: too densely populated to make an appealing direct conquest for now.
Red = Greece: see above
Green = Roman Empire: actually a break-away Leutvian puppet, ostensibly ruled by the "legitimate" Roman Emperor after he fled the country.

Persian Empire = pink
Land-focused power with territorially extensive empire but something of a poor cousin to the rich sea-focused Indian states; think of it as this world's equivalent of Russia.

Roman Republic = brown
The Roman Empire just isn't what it used it be...

Points of Interest:
1: One of several "Exclusive Trading Zones" set up by various Indian states; these are Indian territorial enclaves no longer under Roman rule.

2: Southern coast given away by Hispania in exchange for help with their revolution...

3: The Leutvians finally really are a proper Mediterranean people after taking a big chunk of what used to be the Roman Empire in the last war. The Romans weren't very happy about the whole thing.

4: There used to be a Rus empire here but the Persians put an end to that.

5: The last Roman-Persian war went really badly for the Romans...

Tech level of this world is supposed to be 1930-40ish at this point. This is the situation just before the outbreak of this world's equivalent of WWII.

Located between Lada and Pordaga, the largest two continents of Nova Atlantis, are the Douglas Archipelligo. Named for the famed Dark Age pirate warlord Roddam Douglas who first discovered and first colonized these islands using mainly the captured crews of ships that his fleet stole and shanghaied artisans, whores and farmgirls to create the town of Port Douglas from 1344 to 1350 After Tranquility, the Douglas Archipeligo are a fairly substantial volcanic tropical archipelligo with about a two thirds as much land as the British Isles of Terra. Due to their isolation, life has evolved on these island (especially the main Island called Douglasland) along lines quite diferent of those of life on Lada, Pordaga or Forodwraith. Among them are the scrubsnappers.

Scrubsnappers are descended from seal-like Beach Wallowers that gradually hunted more and more on land, evolving into the dominant land predatory. Scrubsnappers are 0.8 to 1.5 meters long on average and weigh about 20 to 50 kilograms. They have an odd waddling walk using their middle two legs on modified flippers. Their prefered method of hunting is ambush and they can reach speeds of up to twenty four kilometers per hour over short distances. While not the most efficient predator, they can bring down a 200 kilogram Striderwrech or an unprepared human. Sixteen species of Scrubsnappers have been identified.

Or: full body cybernetic replacement with nanotubes, diamondoid, and other exotic substances for fun and profit.

Yes, that's a lady. Hair is a pain in the ass to draw so I haven't done that yet (and you won't be able to tell in the drawing, but it will be awesome prehensile carbon nanotube muscle hair with cooling channels and integrated sensors, because this is the FUTURE). This is only the undersuit (and a WIP of it, no less). Actual armor will come later. Also, gun of the FUTURE (which appears to be cut off by the forum software, FML):

Image

No, there is no trigger or means of looking through the sight. The user does all that with her mind. Because this is the FUTURE. Comprende?

This is a Ascended Hnronkoban. He is native to a place known as the Dark Archipelago, an area divided into several kingdoms and a few principalities. All of them are cold. All of them are scary. This one hails from the Theocracy of Liktgszeb, ruled over by the priesthood of Gszeb, who 5,000 years ago made the world as a breeding ground for his divine legions. Those warriors who die in battle are taken into his army. Gszeb rules through the priests who rule out of cities built around pyramids, but they delegate the administration of the land to a warrior nobility who have fiefs. Beneath them are artisans and common preachers and at the very bottom are the noble's serfs. Serfs are barred from the use of money, they till the fields for their masters and give him 30% of their harvest and work for the government on various projects for a two months a year on various projects for the Priestly Caste. To escape the drudgery of this, there is only two ways out. For young women being bought from nobles to serve as "servents" and for men military service, and for invasions and defensive actions, there is always need for war.

Poorly equipped these peasant conscripts often die in large numbers. Lead by overseers and nobles fighting on the back of large flightless predatory birds, discipline is brutal. Retreating without order or disobeying orders can be punished by slow death on the call of the commander. Most of the survivors return to their lives of toil but those who prove themselves by gaining kills however are selected by the priests. These Ascend out of serfdom and become Ascended. An elite infantry force fighting with crossbows, axes and halberds, clad in heavy Brigandine Armor. There are divided into companies of 144 (Base twelve numbers are common in the dark archipelago) and those are organized into forces of twenty four. In exchange for their service, they are allowed access to specialized recreational facilities and women. However, they never retire. Any individual who makes it past sixty and is not an officer joins suicide brigades to avoid a straw death. This force is useful by the priesthood to counterbalance the Nobility, who occasionally try to rebel. They are well known across the Dark Archipelago and the sight of their tall helmets often instills fear.
