Firebird

Real Name: Katerina Aleksandrina

Origins:

Katerina Aleksandrina's induction into the Winter Corps began in 1995, when she was abducted by the diabolical arch-lich Koschei the Deathless, and taken into the vanishing realm of Beyan. Little did she know that the Winter Corps were planning to defeat Koschei at Beyan, and injure him significantly.

They managed to find the portal to Beyan, a cave on a vanishing island in the Baltics, off Petrograd. The island flickered in and out of existence, but a ritual by the renowned Soviet Socialist Sorcerer Aleksei Braginsky managed to bring it into our reality briefly, giving the Winter Corps a chance to strike back at Koschei for the first time in their existence.

Beyan was a strange, bizarre realm based on Russian folklore, and the Winter Corps had to challenge with many villains - Giants, monsters and the formidable sorceress Baba Yaga. General Winter used his powers to subdue many of them, while the Red Star and Tunguska preferred the more direct route.

Finally, the Winter Corps battled with Koschei, injuring him greatly and rescuing the majority of those abducted. But Aleksei Braginsky had to stay behind to close the portal between Beyan and the mundane world, and there was not enough time to rescue the person who would become Firebird.

Braginsky began to train her in Soviet Socialist Sorcery, seeing her high magical potential, and Aleksandrina felt that the state of the Soviet Union did not matter, it was belief in the Soviet Union that counted for Soviet Socialist Sorcery. Eventually, after a year, Braginsky mustered his energies, and planned to open the portal again, so that he and Firebird could escape.

They found a Phoenix, which Firebird took as a pet, and as they reached the place where the portal to the mundane world should be, Koschei appeared. Braginsky and Koschei fought in an epic battle near the gate, eldritch energies battling the raw force of Communism itself. Braginsky won, but was injured, and could not open the gate, until the Phoenix, understanding their predicament, opened the portal with the tip of its wing.

They managed to contact the Winter Corps, and were taken from Beyan to their headquarters in Moscow, where it was discovered that for the outside world, just three weeks had passed since Braginsky's disappearance.

Braginsky decided to retire due to his injuries, and Firebird was made a probationary member of the Winter Corps, and trained more heavily in Soviet Socialist Sorcery.

Her full membership came during a battle against agents of the Ordo Nosferatu, a secret conspiracy of Vampires that threatens Russia to this day. It was at a castle in western Russia that the Winter Corps was attempting to storm, and Red Star was attacked by an Elder Vampire of the Nosferatu, and was badly injured before the vampire attempted to feast on his blood.

In a fit of rage, Firebird pulled down a decommissioned satellite on the Vampires' castle, annihilating them utterly in a massive explosion. The vampire attacking Red Star was then frozen into an ice statue by General Winter.

She is a member of the team to this day.

Powers and Abilities:

Firebird is a Soviet Socialist Sorcerer, specialising in fire spells, but she is known to use other spells, particularly destructive ones. She also has a pet Phoenix called Sparks, that can perform its own powerful magic. However, she is still very much a novice in the arcane arts. When she gets angry, her magic increases tremendously and she can perform feats she cannot otherwise.

Appearance and Personality

Firebird is a young woman of about 23 years old, and is quite tall and athletic. She has blonde hair and blue eyes. Personality-wise, she has a fiery personality, and is quite hot-blooded, but in battle she is cool, confident and intelligent. She is the second-smartest member of the team after Red Star, as General Winter is getting old and slow.

Weaknesses

Firebird is still a relative novice in magic, and is no master of Soviet Socialist Sorcery. Her powers can't compare with the likes of Daniel Stephenson or Ludwig Schroedinger, but she is still quite skilled in Soviet Socialist Sorcery.

I'm glad you took my suggestions regarding the whole adventure into Koschei's realm to save kidnapped sexy Russian girls. That not only provides her with some backstory, but also gives the Winter Corps some background along with this Koschei guy.

Also, again I am amazed at how fast you produce articles. Seriously. After talking with you, I go out for a short walk and when I return, an article's been made out of what we've discussed!

BTW, I just noticed that it seems like all your characters, from Rising Sun to Red Star to Ludwig to the Transporter to Firebird are... tall and athletic.
The Transporter article wrote:Alexander Bradley is black-haired, averagely tall and quite athletic.
Ludwig's article wrote:Physically, he is in his 30's, having used black magic to halt his aging. He is in his prime, and is quite tall and athletic, with blond hair and blue eyes. His intelligence and skill is indisputable.
Rising Sun wrote:Physically, he is athletic and tall, with glowing red eyes and black hair. His costume consists of a simple white suit.
Red Star wrote:The Red Star has black hair, is quite tall and athletic, and is otherwise unremarkable save for his cybernetic eyes. His costume is all red, with the Soviet hammer and sickle in gold at the centre.

Yeah... but the words kind of pop often... consecutively... all the time. It's not a big deal, but I just felt like pointing it out. :P

I will create an unathletic short person. A mildly (or morbidly!) obese midget! I so will! Just watch me! MUWA-HA-HA!

(To be fair, I've done fat people. It's time to do short people.)

The Commissar

Real name

Molotov Andreiovitch

Origins

Molotov Andreiovitch was born in Stalingrad, 20 years to the day from the end of the battle, where the German hordes were thrown back. Perhaps it was mere DNA, or perhaps it was the indomitable spirit of the Russian people, but as he joined the Red Army, Andreiovitch discovered latent metatalents, the ability to give people an unshakeable resolve with mere words, and powerful charisma, lending his speech undertones of unshakeable resolve.

Like all metahumans in the Red Army, he was turned over to the KGB, who assigned him to the Winter Corps based on his sheer dedication to the Soviet cause, and his courage in the face of deadly danger. His resolve in the Afghanistan confluct was literally unbreakable, as the unaugmented human destroyed terrorist cells without breaking, mowing down them with only his trusty pistol and unshakeable courage.

With the fall of the Soviet Union, his resolve was not broken; in fact, he seemed to gain new strength. And so it has continued to the present day, his powers of resolve never breaking or faltering, much like his indomitable spirit.

Powers and Abilities

The Commissar has the ability to speak words, words with such a strength of resolve that his allies feel a powerful, strong resolve to do what must be done. Also, the Commissar has unshakeable courage and bravery, and some resistance to sanity-damaging effects. Also, he's unusually lucky at times, though whether this is real luck or a latent metatalent is unknown.

Also, he's very good with his gun, a gauss-pistol that can fire straight through tank armour and incorporates an X-ray/infra-red scope.

Weaknesses:

For all his courage, the Commissar is just human and thus sometimes hangs in the back when the Winter Corps is facing foes with metatalents. When they are facing ordinary humans though, his skill with a pistol shows its worth.

How can he handle the recoil of such a powerful weapon that fires rounds with enough kinetic energy to penetrate tank armor? Does that mean he can also one-hand a .50-caliber anti-material rifle or something?

I think he would make a good television or radio show personality.

Does this mean that when the Winter Corps goes into combat with the Commissar, in the midst of battle he'll keep on going on and on with his speeches and inspirational words and the more he goes on and the louder he becomes, the more endowed his comrades become?

Because that's awesome, and like before his battles he can prepare pages of political speeches to quote from and when he runs out, he can start making stuff up.

It reminds me of that bit in the first parts of Stuart's Armageddon, when the Russian tanks kill a herald-demon the Russians immediately send a political officer (or was it the local mayor?) to lecture the dying herald-demon with terrible political speeches as the demon expires.

He would indeed.

Yes, he can.
So, he's supestrong? Because if his gun can penetrate tank armor, that means his gun is basically a miniature tank cannon and the ballistic performance of his bullets is comparable to armor-piercing tank shells, which means that his shooting hand can handle the recoil of a tank cannon.

Yes, he's superstrong, although his durability isn't enhanced, which is why he stays at the back when the Winter Corps is fighting metahuman foes.

The Red Star

Origins:

Mikhail Rodion was a member of the Spetsnaz, fighting in Afghanistan against the Mujihadeen, terrorist scum who desperately believed that they could defeat the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The Winter Corps was fighting in the same general area as Rodion's Spetsnaz task force, and so, as the Winter Corps were crushing yet another terrorist cell, the Mujihadeen struck, ambushing them with Kalashnikovs and RPGs, one of which struck a helicopter close to Rodion's IFV.

The helicopter crashed on Rodion, shattering his bones and badly mangling his body. By all rights he should have been dead when the Winter Corps arrived at the scene, but somehow his shattered body held on to life. He was healed by the Soviet Socialist Sorcerer Aleksei Braginsky, and sent back to Moscow.

There, the high-ups decided something. They would make him a true man of steel, a cyborg hero of the Soviet Union. And so, the cyborgisation process began. It took five years, lasting until 1992, but when it had been done, Mikhail Rodion was more steel than flesh.

His first mission took place in 1993, when he single-handedly infiltrated an Ordo Nosferatu base, killing their leader before ordering an airstrike to reduce all the vampires to so much dust.

Since then, Mikhail Rodion has been a valuable member of the Winter Corps and a core member of the team.

Powers and Abilities

On the surface, Mikhail Rodion is a normal human, but the Red Star is a cyborg, a living testament to the engineering skills of Mother Russia. His blood is infested with cutting-edge anti-disease and ageing nanobots, keeping him as young and powerful as the day they were introduced. His bones have been strengthened with light-weight super-strong metallic alloys, and his muscles have been replaced with plastic fibre, massively increasing his strength. His blood vessels have also been strengthened with plastic to minimise the risk of blood loss, and he has automatic drug dispensers at the base of his brain that remove fear and pain, triggered to activate if his adrenaline levels go up.

More than that, in his brain there are computers, designed to interface with his cybernetic eyes, allowing him to store snapshots in his mind. These computers also function, along with his synth-nerves, to vastly enhance his reflexes, clock speed, and such, enabling him to literally dodge bullets and move with unparalleled speed among normal humans. He possesses extremely fine motor control and a mind that thinks in nanoseconds, enabling him to win fights that would have been impossible without these advantages. Powering all this is a fusion reactor, making him immortal (with replacements for his few remaining biological parts) as long as it functions. He uses as his main weapon a tesla-rifle, with a gauss-pistol as his side-arm.

Appearance and Personality

The Red Star has blond hair, blue eyes, and is comparatively tall compared to normal people due to his cybernetic enhancements. Personality-wise, he is extremely courageous, and has a devotion to duty, and is willing to sacrifice himself to protect his fellow team-mates. He is also quite patriotic for Russia.

The Reality Hacker

Origins:

Pavel Isidor was the very epitome of the playful hacker. He was very cunning, a master at hiding his tracks, and absolutely brilliant with computer code. He could do anything, from creating a web-site from whole cloth to making viruses that melted hard-drives, in under five minutes. Not that he guessed his affinity for computers was anything supernatural, at least he thought - it was simply something he was very good in.

So it was, that after wiping the hard-drive of a rogue, mad technotheocrat who eventually went to Siberia to work on AI, that he found himself on the run from a bunch of said Technotheocrat's henchmen, who were very displeased with his playful hackery.

Running from a bunch of rogue Crusadroids, trapped at the end of an alleyway, the Crusadroids ready to unleash their inferno-guns on him, his magical powers first manifested. He didn't know how it happened, but he found himself chanting lines of computer code, the code manifesting into reality, leading to a particle beam hitting one of the Crusadroids in the face, which melted.

Struggling to remember what had happened, he did it again, leading to a Crusadroid exploding as its power-plant detonated.

The Winter Corps found him, having tracked the magical resonance to his location.

They offered him amnesty for all the times when his hacking had hit government databases, and a lifetime salary, if he would work for them.

Naturally, he accepted.

Powers and Abilities

Pavel Isidor has seemingly supernatural powers with computer code - Lua, Java, whatever, he can learn it almost instantly. But his main power is the ability to do truly supernatural things with it. When he works his magic, time seems to slow down for him, holograms of hard light forming, code rippling around him as he chants it breathlessly.

His magic is almost always technological in nature - a destructive spell manifests as a laser or particle beam, hovering spells as anti-gravity, illusions as holograms, defensive spells as geometric constructs of pure energy. He works it effortlessly, but it is still hard for him to control and instinctive in nature, meaning that he is loathe to use it in situations where bystanders might be hurt.

He is also a supremely good hacker and code-writer, and works on what he calls 'computing exercises' in his spare time.

Appearance and Personality

Pavel Isidor is good-natured and fun to be around. He doesn't like killing people if there isn't any need for it, and generally is a nice guy. He's in his early 20's, and has black hair, is averagely tall and athletic, and is above average intelligence, which might help account for his seemingly supernatural skills.

He wears a plain black leather longcoat and jeans.

Weaknesses

For all his raw power, Pavel Isidor still has a hard time controlling when and where his magic is performed (although he can control what it does), although meditation exercises have helped. It tends to happen most frequently in times of stress, which is usually in combat, which means that his skills haven't seen much practice outside of combat.

Not bad. But, really, just because he talks in funny morse-code and there's Matrix holograms around him, how is his sudden shooting out of particle beams more "technological" than Son Goku shooting out a hadoken? Or how different is his holograms from, say, some kind of illusion or phantasm cast by an ordinary magician? What are the mechanics involved? Is an energy beam technological because it is preceded by special effects from the Matrix?

I think normal magic users already exploit and cheat the laws of reality in a way that can be described as "hacking" - well, I'm not sure, it depends on how the other writers are approaching their "magic". Except these guys like Daniel Stephensen, Mary Lamb and Hiram actually had to learn the mechanics first, perhaps even scientifically, so they can figure it out.

Whereas this guy's powers just magically came out of the blue, and it looks like he's not even figuring it out or understanding it beyond just meditating, and is really more like a metahuman super power. Well, the way he described is pretty much metahuman anyway, since his powers just manifested without prompting. I think one of the differences between magic and superpowers is, in Comix, that magic is something that can actually be learned or something. I mean, even your Schrodinger character didn't suddenly gain the power to magically kill racial minorities, he had to learn from those Byzantine books and Japanese whatevers you mentioned.

So, yeah, it makes one ask about where this guy's reality hacking "magic" came from. Because, so far, it seems poorly defined aside from "particle beams" and "Matrix special effects". There's nothing wrong with some character who shoots lasers or something, but more detail would be nice.

Also, on Schrodinger. I know how you're crazy about having your great genocidal godly Germanian gesundheits go on winning WWII and smashing the Red Square and wrecking the Kremlin, but excuse me, what's stopping the Communist Manifester, or even Comrade Felix, or the whole slew of other Russian metas and the Russian military from outright kicking Schrodinger in his great genocidal godly Germanian gesundheit genitals? How many times do your supervillains, from Koschei to Schrodinger to whoever's next, have to wreck Moscow?

What you just wrote is pretty much no different from some Nazi nutsack or some jumbo Japanese jerkoff wrecking the White House and defecating on Capitol Hill and getting away with it.

Pavel Isidor looked, at Red Square in ruins, the Kremlin battered and torn, the dead bodies of Japanese clone-troopers and the spirit-husks of the undead all around, already fading from existence. The Commissar fired his gun, seeking to end it, but the madman vanished before he could do anything.

'Well,' said Pavel Isidor grimly. 'Seems it was worth it.'
I agree with Shroom, Kamin. You don't just destroy cities on a whim and get away with it with no consequences. Besides, THIS IS RUSSIA'S CAPITAL. You think they're just gonna sit around and let some idiot with a private army waltz in and do that much damage? No matter how magicked up Ludwig is and how many Japanese clone-trooper knocks off he has, his army won't even make it to the gates of Moscow. The Russian military, metas, and magicians will flatten it before it can even come close.

Man, all this wank almost makes me wanna kill off Ludwig in Shadows of Stalingrad to make him non-cannon after WWII. Almost. But I won't, because I'm not that big of a dick.

I warn you, however, Kamin. This is the reason why we ignore most of your stuff as non-canon and what we use we use as punching bags. You refuse to play by the rules we set for the universe in favor of unrealistic wank. And, yes, even in the crazy context of Comix this is unrealistic wank.

It's really strange. I mean, that's what he writes about all the time. Some (evil) person with some (grinning/smiling/whatevering) facial expression delighting in the destruction of cities or just killing a whole bunch of people. I mean, we see it in a lot of his stuff, most of it. It kind of gets old. But, hopefully, like he'll just grow over it.

You should focus your attention on things other than wrecking cities up.

Try exercising yourself by thinking of characters who don't fight or destroy things or take delight in villainy for a living.

And if you have to destroy a city, use a smaller one. No-one cares if Mr. Schrödinger goes on a rampage through Novopokrovka or Zhirnovsk and is narrowly stopped from eating everyone there. But frickin' Moscow? Yeah, people care about that. This isn't exactly rocket science. It's the damned capital! Of course he can't attack that on his own, and it's a well known fact that the Germans never reached Moscow as such!

Especially given that whilst in Moscow, the Heart of Russia, Communist Manifester is pretty well equal with Archwind in terms of power. And Kamin, this is "shrug off nuclear weaponry" powerful. There's effectively no army that can invade Moscow if Manifester is against the idea, just as there's no army that can invade any American DC if Archwind feels like getting off his ass. And in both cases, the heroes will in fact get up and do something. Not just watch and let piddling little Winter Corps/SWAT dicks handle it as Moscow/Washington DC burns.

Re: Active Members of the Winter Corps

Post by Czernobog »

I've forgotten about this for a while, unfortunately having little time to work on the Corps' leader, General Winter himself:

GENERAL WINTER

Real Name: Vladimir Chervenkov

Origins:

Ludwig could tell that this figure, with his officer's coat, his ushanka, and his snow-white hair, was backed by something, some manner of elemental force that was stronger than anything he could conjure up. However, one never won unless you tried. His hand began to project a stream of fire, countered by a wall of ice.

So, fire against ice. This would be interesting.

Vladimir Chervenkov was born to Pavel Chervenkov and Anya Chervenkova in the year 1920, in the city of Leningrad. Little did they know that he had been empowered by the elemental spirit of the Russian winter, to defend the Motherland against a threat no-one suspected - Germany. In the course of events, Chervenkov discovered his powers and joined the military in 1938 as a Captain. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1940, as his commanding officer was purged for 'gross ideological misconduct', the real reason (insofar as there was a reason) remaining unknown. Then, when Operation Barbarossa began, the First Parahuman Corps was founded in July, as the forces of the Third Reich swept through Russia. Being the most senior and ideologically correct member out of all the metahumans, magicians, sorcerers and supernatural beings part of the First Parahuman Corps, Lieutenant Chervenkov was made its leader and given the code-name 'General Winter'.

It was at Stalingrad, that most bloody of battles on the Eastern Front, that General Winter first made his fame, freezing the Volga to allow the Russians to advance and reinforce, swallowing German divisions in massive blizzards that killed many from the sheer cold or simply buried them under snow, and eventually duelled with Feldmarschall-magier Ludwig Schrödinger, driving him back from Stalingrad and shattering the German Sixth Army.

He advanced with the Soviet forces, at the last placing the Soviet flag over the Reichstag, the photo used as a massive propaganda image.

He also defeated Koschei in the 1960's, stopping him after he placed Moscow in a deathly slumber. In the 1970's, he battled the hypnosis-crazed revolutionaries of Austerlitz in the Siege of Warsaw. In the 1980's, he battled with Mujihadeen in the rocky mountains of Afghanistan.

He remains the leader of the Winter Corps to this day, although he retired from the rank of General some time ago.

Appearance:

Vladimir Chervenkov has snow-white hair - not as a consequence of age, but as a result of being enhanced and empowered by the elemental spirit of the Russian winter. He is old, but retains all the speed of his younger days. He doesn't show this, leading many villains to foolishly underestimate him.

Powers:

General Winter is superstrong and superdurable. Also, standing on Russian soil (the former Soviet republics in Eastern Europe and Central Asia count for this purpose) he can control the weather, making it rain or snow, creating thunderstorms, and other such things. Also, he has the ability to control telekinetically and create ice and snow (he does not need to stand on Russia's soil to do this). He can freeze water, having mastered this power so greatly he can freeze a falling rain-drop, or the water in an organism's body, or the vapour in the air.

You have ruled this galaxy for ten thousand years.
You have little of account to show for your efforts.
Order. Unity. Obedience.
We taught the galaxy these things.

And we shall do so again.
